Now the biotech company,  Bio Sidus have announced the arrival of four calves. \u003cbr/\u003eThe newborn Jersey Heifers  have been named Patagonia 1, 2, 3 and 4 - after the vast pampa region of South America. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists say they will start producing the human hormone in their milk when they reach adulthood.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Carlos Melo, Special Projects Manager at Bio Sidus explains that the aim of the project is to produce treatment  for diabetics at a reduced cost.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe adds  that one day of milk production from a single cow could help treat 12,000 people with diabetes.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe calves are being kept at Patagonia's Dynasty Pharmaceutical Dairy Farm. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce they start to produce milk, it will be purified and insulin will be extracted from it.\u003cbr/\u003eAndres Becovich, Tech Development Manager of Patagonia's Dynasty  Pharmaceutical Dairy Farm says the project aims to generate genetically modified stock that can provide various medication for humans via their milk.  \u003cbr/\u003eAs the world's third-biggest exporter of beef, Argentina is among only 9 other countries that have cloned livestock.  \u003cbr/\u003eScientists injected the human insulin gene into a foetus and then extracted cells from it. \u003cbr/\u003eCloning techniques were then used to insert the genetically modified cells into an embryo which was then inserted into a surrogate mother cow. \u003cbr/\u003eThe result was Patagonia 1, 2, 3 and 4 which were born by Caesarean section in February and March 2007. \u003cbr/\u003eRecent technological advancements in the cloning of animals have been highly controversial. \u003cbr/\u003eMany religious groups oppose all forms of cloning, including the potentially life-saving cloning of individual organs, on the grounds that life begins at conception. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the news was welcomed at the Pontifical Catholic University in Buenos Aires. \u003cbr/\u003eAlberto Bochatey, Bioethics Manager at the University says further work is required to ensure long term production of the genetically modified milk and tests should monitor human reaction to the insulin. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the Marie Curie Hospital in Buenos Aires, Dr. Carlos Markmann, President of the Diabetic Association said the advancement will not change the basic treatment for diabetics but it would improve it.  \u003cbr/\u003eScientists at Bio Sidus hope the insulin produced in  the milk of the calves could be available within 2 years.\u003cbr/\u003eClients are
