which dates from the turn of the century,  burst on 40th Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue, near Times Square in New York city.\u003cbr/\u003eCascading water filled the area, flooded basements and turned roads into rushing rivers.\u003cbr/\u003eSubways were flooded, forcing the shutdown of services in much of Manhattan.\u003cbr/\u003eJust north of the ruptured main, Times Square was not affected by the water, but its normally bustling atmosphere was devoid of cars as traffic was diverted.\u003cbr/\u003eTimes Square subway station, however experienced floods and was brought to a standstill.\u003cbr/\u003eReports say water was three feet deep in stations expanding more than a mile from the rupture.\u003cbr/\u003eAbove ground it was a six inches deep on streets near the pipe.\u003cbr/\u003ePower was shut off to the affected subway lines to prevent electric fires.\u003cbr/\u003eDepartment of Environmental Protection officials said it was unlikely water services to any buildings in the area would be interrupted due to other mains supplying the neighbourhoods.\u003cbr/\u003eSome residents, however, have reported loss of water.\u003cbr/\u003eMayor of the city, Rudolph Giuliani says hundreds of people are working to clean up the damage.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said it will take 24 hours or more to put the subways back in operation and up to two weeks to repair some roads.\u003cbr/\u003eWater main breaks are relatively common in New York City because half of its 6,000 miles of water pipes were installed before
