Footage from the late 70s resurfaced a few years ago. It was shot by a friend of the band on a small camera. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I forgot it even existed. But it had us recording 'Promised Land,' and doing a lot of other things we liked. It was amazing to see,\" Springsteen said.\u003cbr/\u003eHis wife, Patti Scialfa stood next to him as he recounted the thrill of discovering the footage 30 years later.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There was quite a bit of it, so we did something similar from 'Born to Run.' Director Thom Zimny put together a nice film for that,\" Springsteen said.\u003cbr/\u003e'Darkness on the Edge of Town' was a defining moment for Springsteen. It saw him mature as an artist and refine his vision to reflect the \"deep despair and resilience\" he saw among the small towns where he grew up.\u003cbr/\u003eSpringsteen defines the growing pains for writing, recording, and producing the record.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The process we used then was quite similar that we used now except not anywhere near as painful. We were just learning to make records. And so, the records were long and they were hard, and we didn't really know what we were doing. We were also trying to build a core philosophy around of what our band was going to be, and what we wanted to talk about. It was a really, it was a very shaping album,\" Springsteen said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe film captures that spirit, and Springsteen was impressed at the premiere.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think Thom did a nice job in the film capturing the questions that were up in the air, and the stakes we felt we were playing for in 1978.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEmmy-award winning producer Thom Zimny collaborated with Springsteen to provide a narrative to the never-before-seen footage captured from 1976 to 1978.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There's so much music that's out there that's beyond what we know of 'Darkness on the Edge of Town.' To me that was the biggest surprise and it had a big influence on seeing Bruce as an artist, and focusing on the process of his creativity,\" Zimny said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe film's producer, and longtime Springsteen manager Jon Landau was also at the premiere.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1974, Landau was a music critic for an alternative Boston paper. He wrote an article for claiming: 'I have seen rock and roll's future, and its name is Bruce Springsteen.' \u003cbr/\u003eOn the red carpet, Landau reflected what he saw in 'The Boss' all those years ago.\u003cbr/\u003e \"My first impressions of him from seeing him live and getting to know him in 1974 was that he was a genius,\" Landau said.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd that admiration remains strong with Landau.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He's an incredible person, of which I think is another thing that comes out in the film. But that inner core of talent and perception about the world around him, he's brings it with him. It's just wherever it comes from, he brings it with him.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"Darkness on the Edge of Town\" was Springsteen's fourth studio album. But unlike \"Born to Run,\" which it followed, Springsteen was more prolific. He wrote nine songs, eight of them appearing on the album - \"Darkness on the Edge of Town\" was honed into a 10-track album from nearly 100 others. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Darkness\" album featured many songs recorded with a full band immediately after being written. Tracks covered the plight of average Americans, from the struggling everyday hero in \"Badlands\" to hopelessness in the title track.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the excess songs ended up on his next studio album, 'The River.' The documentary shows an early version of 'Sherry Darling' where Springsteen, and 'Little Steven' Van Zandt bang out a playful version.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter its Toronto premiere, \"The Promise\" will air Oct. 7 on HBO, then will be included in a CD and DVD boxed set release of \"Darkness on the Edge of Town\" due in stores Nov. 16.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television\u003cbr/\u003eToronto, Canada 14 September 2010\u003cbr/\u003e1. He had a little camera and he came in the studio. I think the footage sat for 30 years almost, you know. At one point, we got together a couple of years ago, so we end up with a huge archive of film from when we were 25, 26 years old, and amazingly -I didn't know it existed. I forgot it even existed. But it had us recording 'Promised Land,' and doing a lot of other things we liked. It was amazing to see. There was quite a bit of it, so we did something similar from 'Born to Run.' Director Thom Zimny put together a nice film for that, so we it was just part of package we wanted to put together to come out in a little while with 3 CDs of music.
