The black tie affair honored filmmaker Spike Lee, Jane Alexander, former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts; 60 Minutes creator Don Hewitt; Congressman Charles B. Rangel and the Sony Pictures Classics' executive team of Michael Barker, Marcie Bloom and Tom Bernard. Elliott Silverstein, founding president of the Artists Rights Foundation was presented the John Huston Award. \u003cbr/\u003eAmong the presenters were  Francis Ford Coppola, Tim Robbins Martin Scorsese, Halle Berry and Rosie Perez. Perez first garnered attention for her portray of Spike Lee's fast-talking, no-nonsense girlfriend  in 1989's \"Do the Right Thing\".\u003cbr/\u003e Berry is the first African-American to win the Academy Award for Best Actress (Monster's Ball, 2001) and began her film career in Spike Lee's \"Jungle Fever\". She will next be seen in the new James Bond film \"Die Another Day\".\u003cbr/\u003eFrancis Ford Coppola is a five-time Academy Award-winning director, writer and producer. His body of work includes directorial credits for 20 film, including \"The Godfather\" trilogy, \"Apocalypse Now\",  \"The Outsiders\", and \"Bram Stoker's Dracula\".\u003cbr/\u003eTim Robbins is an actor, filmmaker and executive producer whose credits include  an award-winning role in Robert Altman's The Player, a starring role in Bob Roberts,  and roles in such films as The Shawshank Redemption, Pret-a Porter, The Hudsucker Proxy, Bull Durham, Mission to Mars, and in the recently released Human Nature.\u003cbr/\u003eDirector, screenwriter, producer and actor Martin Scorsese is considered one of the seminal New York city filmmakers. His works include Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, GoodFellas, The Age of Innocence, Kundun. His latest project, Gangs of New York, is scheduled for release later this year.  \u003cbr/\u003eAmong those being honored Sunday night was Jane Alexander  a renowned actress, author, producer and political activist. She won a Tony Award in 1968 for her Broadway debut performance opposite James Earl Jones in The Great White Hope and was nominated six more times. She has received four Academy Award nominations for her work in film and in 1993, Alexander was appointed by President Bill Clinton to be the Chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts. \u003cbr/\u003eThe trio of Michael Barker, Tom Bernard and Marcie Bloom from Sony Pictures Classics was honored for their successful efforts at championing independent filmmakers. They have worked together with the likes of Woody Allen, Agniezska Holland, James Ivory, Akira Kurosawa, Ang Lee, Louis Malle, David Mamet, John Sayles and more. They have released independent and feature films including: Slacker, Howard's End, Vanya on 42nd Street, Orlando, The Spanish Prisoner, Central Station, Run Lola Fun, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and many more. \u003cbr/\u003eSpike Lee is one of America's most influential and controversial filmmakers. In 1986, his debut feature, the independently-produced comedy, She's Gotta Have It, earned him the Prix de Jeunesse Award at the Cannes Film Festival and set him at the forefront of the independent film movement in American cinema. His credits include School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Bamboozled, Summer of Sam, He Got Game, Clockers, Mo' Better Blues and Malcolm X which earned Denzel Washington an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In addition to his feature films, Lee has also produced and directed four documentaries and has authored six books on the making of his films. Lee also founded 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks and created Spike/DDB -- a full service advertising agency -- concentrating on the urban/ethnic market. \u003cbr/\u003eThe DGA Honors originally were scheduled for 17 November 2001 but were postponed following the terrorist attacks of September eleventh.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Directors Guild of America is the nation's pre-eminent organization representing directors and members of the directorial team.  It was founded in 1936 by 13 of Hollywood's leading filmmakers, including the legendary John Ford and King Vidor.  Today the DGA represents over 12,000 members who work in feature film; filmed, taped and live television; commericials; and documentaries.
