Mid of people tasting dark-coloured mead UPSOUND: (English) Becky Starr: \u003cbr/\u003e\"Got a little bit of sweetness to it and a nice tartness from the blackberry juice we use, lots of berry flavour.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIt's known as the drink of the gods, and now mead is making a comeback here on earth.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ancient fermented drink is enjoying a surge in popularity, with grown up Harry Potter fans among a new generation being introduced to the marvels of mead.   \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough it looks like traditional wine, what these people are tasting is something very different.\u003cbr/\u003eMead, that legendary tipple of Viking saga and medieval verse, is made without grapes. And now it's making a comeback - especially in the U.S. \u003cbr/\u003eAt a tasting at Starrlight Mead in North Carolina, Mallory Radcliffe and her family are enjoying a variety of ancient tipples.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough they'd tried traditional mead before, they say they're surprised at the wide selection now available.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our favourite was definitely the peach, I think across the board everybody enjoyed the peach the best. Real sweet, real light,\" says Radcliffe.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditionally made with three ingredients - honey, water and yeast  - modern meaderies, as the mead breweries are called, are experimenting with almost anything organic.\u003cbr/\u003eKeeping the honey, water and yeast as a base, a variety of fruit-flavoured meads called melomels are now on offer. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are also what's known as methyglyns - made with herbs and spices. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd then there's what self-professed mead guru,  Vicky Rowe calls weirdomels -  that's mead made with all sorts of other vegetable ingredients.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I had a beet mead that was screaming pink, like, fluorescent pink, and actually was quite tasty. I've had mead made with nuts, with exotic honeys you've never heard of. You know, pretty much anything you can throw into a liquid and ferment,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eMead producers are riding a surge of interest in micro-brewing and locally produced goods.\u003cbr/\u003eBecky and her partner Ben were first exposed to the ancient beverage at a Renaissance fair.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's not just for the Renaissance fair anymore,\" says Becky Starr the co-owner of Starrlight Mead. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter years of experimenting and rave reviews from friends they decided to launch their own meadery.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2006 they travelled to Boulder, Colorado, and entered their spiced cyser (mead made with apples) into the International Mead Festival's home mead-maker competition. \u003cbr/\u003eThey brought home the wooden mazer (goblet) for Best in Show.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We made about 40 cases of our spiced apple and sold through those in about two months. We expected that to go through the end of the year,\" says Ben Starr.  \u003cbr/\u003eDown in Vicky Rowe's basement in Youngsville, North Carolina, the wine rack  holds bottles from mead makers around the world as well as from nearly every U.S. State.\u003cbr/\u003eThey range from a mead made by a New Jersey man who makes authentic Tej (Ethiopian mead) with Ethiopian gesho - a hop-like bittering agent - to a brewer in Anchorage, Alaska, who flavours his meads with everything from locally picked currants to coriander as well as Indonesian Koryntje cinnamon spice and hot peppers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And this is like a pepper mead, so it is sweet and hot,\" says Rowe. \u003cbr/\u003eMead is Rowe's passion. She says she's watched the number of meaderies in the United States triple to around 150 in the last decade.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They're just popping up all over and a lot of those are wineries that have decided to add mead to their mainstream product lines, which is just incredible, it is just wonderful,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eMead is believed to be the world's oldest alcoholic beverage.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Rowe, traces of a mead-like substance were found in a 9,000-year-old Chinese burial chamber and, until about 1500, mead was the alcoholic beverage of choice.\u003cbr/\u003eThe modern resurgence started in the 1960s when hippies rediscovered the joys of the drink. \u003cbr/\u003eThen, with the spread of renaissance fairs, re-enactment groups and the growth of the craft beer industry, what was once seen as a musty old drink suddenly became new and exciting, according to Rowe.\u003cbr/\u003ePicking up where the 14th century English author Geoffrey Chaucer left off, Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling has introduced a whole new generation of readers to the honey wine.\u003cbr/\u003ePotter fans will no doubt recall how Ron Weasley was nearly done to death by a poisoned bottle of Madame Rosmerta's oak-matured mead in \"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Starrs opened their store in September and are busy educating the tasting public.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We've seen a big increase in the number of people that know actually what mead is, which is surprising to us,\" says Becky Starr. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are no official figures on how much mead is made or sold.\u003cbr/\u003eThe U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco, Tax and Trade Bureau's wine statistical releases do not list mead, or honey wine, as a separate
