SOUNDBITE (English) Ian Rumgay, Parkview International spokesman :\u003cbr/\u003e\"The foundation stones were laid in 1931, and the building was completed in 1933, as Battersea A, and it quickly broke all world records for clean power generation thanks to a ingenious system of removing the sulphur from the smoke that went up. The building was designed in part by the great Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, he did the Bodleian Library, Liverpool cathedral, Waterloo bridge, and of course the red telephone box as well, the K-9 telephone box. So work began in 1937 on Battersea B but the war years intervened and for a long time the power station operated with just three chimneys, and was known locally as the three-pin plug (after the British electrical plug). So anything from the Toyo Ito pavilion which was part a Serpentine gallery commission, part our our annual architecture commission bought by the owners, Parkview (International, the company which owns Battersea power station) in 2002, to things of small mobile telephones, plates and cups, that are bought in the shops to cinema-scale images that are displayed in the power station itself.\"\u003cbr/\u003e25. Various of power station \u003cbr/\u003eIt is one of London's most iconic buildings but it has been empty for decades.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the Battersea power station is being redeveloped.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd to kick things off the Serpentine Gallery has organised an exhibition of Chinese artists in the shell of the power station.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is one of the first times members of the public have been allowed inside the building.\u003cbr/\u003eA power station has occupied this site in Battersea on the banks of the River Thames for seventy five years.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has been unused for many of those years as the station ceased producing electricity for London in 1953.\u003cbr/\u003eA number of plans have been suggested for how best to use the power station, including an amusement park and a museum.\u003cbr/\u003eParkview International is the Hong Kong based company that now owns the power station.\u003cbr/\u003eSpokesman for the company Ian Rumgay explains the history of the building.\u003cbr/\u003eRumgay says they hope to develop a new cultural centre for London on the power station site.\u003cbr/\u003eLondon's Serpentine Gallery is currently hosting an exhibition of Chinese artists in the building and surrounding grounds.\u003cbr/\u003eThis has allowed one of London's most iconic buildings to be  opened up to the public for virtually the the first time.  \u003cbr/\u003eBicycles have been provided for people to get around the large site easily.\u003cbr/\u003eJulia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist, both from the Serpentine Gallery, are two of three curators of the exhibition.\u003cbr/\u003eHans Ulrich Obrist says there are many exciting artists working in China and the gallery felt it was time they were introduced to London.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition features work from both established artists such a Ai Weiwei to younger, emerging Chinese artists.\u003cbr/\u003eGu Dexin's wall of apples received a lot of attention.\u003cbr/\u003eBut how difficult was it to curate an exhibition in a site such as Battersea ?\u003cbr/\u003eJulia Peyton-Jones says the space lent itself well to housing
