Mid of Christmas tree and people riding \u003cbr/\u003eA group of cyclists used pedal power to light up a Christmas tree in Hong Kong on Sunday in a campaign organised by the environmental group Greenpeace.\u003cbr/\u003eInstead of mains electricity, several cycling machines connected to a generator provided the power source for the tree.\u003cbr/\u003eThe eight-foot (2.4 metre) tree was decorated with confetti and environmental-friendly bulbs, which release six times less carbon dioxide than traditional bulbs. \u003cbr/\u003eThe idea was thought up by engineer Lo Kok-keung Ir, from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was one drawback though, the light of bulbs go out when people stop cycling.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Lo said the bicycle could generate up to 28 volts for the Christmas tree. \u003cbr/\u003eMany local people and tourists took turns on the bicycles to keep the tree illuminated.\u003cbr/\u003eJean Christophe, a 46 year-old French tourist passing through Hong Kong, said it was hard to ride on the bicycle generator, but it did send a good message. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think, I think it's good because the people is maybe stopping and asking what is it to do for, and maybe to develop some conscious in the people in Hong Kong,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eAs the temperature in Hong Kong often hits record highs, Greenpeace has been campaigning for promoting the importance of saving energy to decrease global warming. \u003cbr/\u003eEarlier this year, the Hong Kong Observatory warned that winter may disappear from Hong Kong in 40
