Now the visitors' list is to include the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. \u003cbr/\u003eThe landscaped gardens are popular with many locals and tourists who come to enjoy the peace and quiet amid the plants and the wildlife.\u003cbr/\u003eTucked away in one of the corners of the Gardens is a dedicated space, just for orchids. \u003cbr/\u003eManaged by Dr Nigel Taylor, the National Orchid Garden, is home to several different types of orchids. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Taylor believes their unique forms and rich variety of colours are what makes orchids so popular amongst the general public.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Orchids have always been I think the plant that everybody, the man in the street, recognises as something special. They have an endless diversity of form, many of them look quite strange to the idea, they don't look like conventional flowers and I think because of their exotic colours and form people have always valued them above all other plants,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eBut beautiful flowers aren't in themselves the main attraction - since 1957, certain visiting celebrities and dignitaries such as former UK Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel have been honoured by having an Orchid named after them.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The concept of Orchid naming is as old as I am. It was started in 1956 so it's been going 56 years and we've named over 190 Orchids after dignitaries and VIPs,\" he explains.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd it is precisely this honour that will be bestowed upon the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, otherwise more commonly known as Prince William and Kate Middleton, when they visit Singapore as part of the Diamond Jubilee tour.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Taylor is looking forward to the next generation of royals visiting the Gardens. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This Orchid naming is a very special thing for me personally because I'm British and these are members of the British Royal family coming to my new garden here in Singapore and although I wouldn't say I'm particularly a Royalist I have met many members of the Royal family in the past in my previous job and so it is really nice to see what you might call the next generation of British Royals,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Dr Taylor isn't the only one ready to greet the next generation of Royals - local journalist Jeremy Au who works for the national daily The Straits Times says this visit is no ordinary visit and that the Royal couple has a distinct and different appeal about them.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is not just an ordinary couple, it's not just another leader of another country, this couple has a celebrity draw. People look at them not just as a political figure they look at them actually as a star in their own right and so I think that brings a different flavour to this visit,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe three day Royal visit to Singapore will include a trip to the recently opened Gardens by the Bay, Singapore's answer to London's Hyde Park or New York's Central Park. Built in the shadow of the city's financial district, the gardens are built on reclaimed land and the structures that seem to sprout from the ground are, in fact, supertrees built to mimic real rainforest trees.\u003cbr/\u003eThe couple will also visit a Rolls Royce factory, and attend a dinner hosted by Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Duck and Duchess of cambridge begin their nine-day trip to Singapore September 11 to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom there the royal couple will visit Malaysia and the Solomon Islands.\u003cbr/\u003eSingapore Botanic Gardens - 5 September 2012\u003cbr/\u003e1.
