And I lived without tears for 25 years and in Venice after my official screening, suddenly all the crowd stood on their legs and start clapping and, you know, I saw in front of my face, young people, old people, middle-age people and many of them with tears in their eyes and they are clapping for five minutes, then ten minutes and then fifteen minutes and after twenty minutes, suddenly the tears came back to my eyes, so in the end this was for me the best prize of Venice. I mean the Golden Lion (award) was a byproduct, but what a byproduct."
Israeli filmmaker Samuel Maoz was 20-years-old when he was assigned as a novice soldier to a tank platoon during Israel's 1982 war with Lebanon.
One of the lasting psychological effects of fighting in that conflict, was an inability to cry. Maoz laughs as he explains, "After the war I realize that I don't have tears anymore, not even you know stupid tears, like you know, you see a stupid tv show or something and you are angry about yourself - why am I crying? - even tears like this I didn't have. And I thought to myself maybe this is what happened to someone who was there. Maybe this was the punishment."
Twenty-five years later, his film "Lebanon," based on his personal experiences, premiered at the 2009 Venice Film Festival and won the Golden Lion Award for Best Film.
The prize has garnered the 48-year-old filmmaker international media attention, film distribution by Sony Pictures Classics and money to work on his next project. But, as Maoz explains, the award brought him something much more precious, "I lived without tears for 25 years and in Venice after my official screening, suddenly all the crowd stood on their legs and start clapping and you know, I saw in front of my face, young people, old people, middle-age people and many of them with tears in their eyes and they are clapping for five minutes, then ten minutes and then fifteen minutes and after twenty minutes, suddenly the tears came back to my eyes, so in the end this was for me the best prize of Venice."
The first attempt to write the script for "Lebanon" floundered due to the effects of post-traumatic stress. After writing just one or two pages, Maoz says, he became overwhelmed by the the smell of burning flesh, or rather the memory of it. That was in 1988 just after he'd completed cinema studies at university. He realized he was not ready to re-visit the horrors of his personal history.
In 2006, Israel entered its second war with Lebanon and that is what Maoz calls his trigger. "Suddenly I understood that I didn't spoke and now our kids are dealing with the same Lebanon again."
He wrote the screenplay in four weeks.
Maoz decided the best way to deliver his story would be by immersing not only his cast but his audience. He locked his actors for several hours in a "very small, dark, and very hot container" which he beat sporadically with iron pipes, simulating the sound and feel of a tank under fire.
The audience comes to know the dark, dank, claustrophobic, feeling of a tank because the entire film is shot from the interior.
Maoz says, "I realized the only way to deliver it, the only way to explain it to someone, to an audience who have no clue, is not through the head, but through the stomach, through the heart and to achieve an emotional understanding, you need to create a very strong experience, so I told myself I will take you, I will put you inside the tank and I will get you totally identified with the characters. I mean you see only what they see, you will know only what they know."
The film does not shy away from graphic and disturbing scenes, mainly viewed through the tank's periscope. Maoz does not attempt to gloss over or glorify the hard, cold facts of war.
"You don't think about tomorrow, about the next hour," he says. "You're just surviving. And you know, when people start to talk with me about war and morality, it sounds to me ridiculous, because war can't open for you the option to be moral."
In the film's notes, handed out at a press screening, Maoz writes, "On June 6, 1982, at 6:15AM, I killed a man for the first time in my life."
There have been many war films made, but not so many written and directed by individuals who served or fought. Maoz's story bears a solemn integrity.
"I remember that in Lebanon when we entered the new town, they told us, okay on fifty percent of the balconies, you have shooters with anti-tank missiles and on the other half, I guess, you have civilians, so if you will start to check balcony after balcony, you won't survive more than three or four balconies, so in the end what are your options?"
Maoz made the film and he says it was out of necessity. It was a cathartic experience that has allowed him to accept himself, if not forgive the deeds of his younger self acting out of self-defense during wartime.
The film opens in New York on August 6 and in Los Angeles on August 13.
Asked if there is any particular message he would like audiences to take from the film, Maoz responds: "That everything is legitimate to bring peace, except killing. Let's do everything to bring peace. I mean, I want that the film will open people's mind and they will ask themselves, who we think we are? Who we become?
