We branded Meru National Park this month and one of the items in the programme branding Meru National Park is to restock it. Various shots of Zebra's getting out of the transport truck at their new home Meru National Park
It is a modern day Noah's Ark..... a mass movement of zebras and impalas from ranch land to a National Park in Kenya.
It is hoped that this re-location project will reduce animal over-population in the town of Naivasha and help conserve many of the endangered species.
Meru National Park is one of Kenya's lesser known wildlife reserves.
The area enjoys large amounts of rainfall thanks to the nearby Mount Kenya and has lush vegetation, making the perfect home for Africa's wildlife.
Now thousands of hoofed animals from a ranch town called Naivasha, have been rounded up and brought to the newly launched Meru National Park.
In total they have so far received 2000 but they are expecting many more to eventually call the 5000 kilometre square (1931 miles square) park home.
The main reason for this is because of overcrowding on the ranch.
Julius Kipng'etich, the Kenya Wildlife Service Director says wild animals such as zebras and impalas (African antelope) are forced to share land with cattle and the land has become densely populated.
In the late 1980's wildlife the Meru Conservation area was decimated through poaching.
It is hoped that this mass relocation of animals will help the park back to its former glory.
The trans location project began July 26th, 2007 and is expected to run for a month.
The project also aims to help conserve and preserve endangered species such as the Grey Zebra, Common Zebra, Impala, Kongoni (large African antelope) and Beisa Oryx.
Dr. Francis Gakuyo, Head of Veterinary Services at the Kenya Wildlife Service explains how a helicopter is used to herd the animals together they are then steered into a trap that has been set for them by the Rangers, and then onto trucks to be relocated.
Of course it doesn't always go smoothly and some of the animals do try to escape.
Robert Njue is the Senior Warden at Meru Conservation Area says that with the help of the French Development Agency (AFD), and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the Kenyan Government, who all provide funding the Rangers have been able to ensure the animals lead the best life possible.
So far since the Kenya Wildlife Service started the process of restoring biodiversity in the park, there have been at least six trans locations to the protected area since 2001.
The Meru Conservation Area Development Project has conducted the trans location activities in phases with the last phase currently being undertaken.
Currently the project has successfully trans-located a total of 504 common zebras, 412 impalas, 128 Reedbucks and 20 Grey zebras all of which were trans-located in Phase one of the operation.
In addition to this the Meru Conservation Area is now an established Black and White Rhino sanctuary with a total of 56 animals i.e. 20 black and 36 white rhino that were trans-located in phase II and III respectively.
Now finally back in the wild, these Zebras may be a bit confused for now, but will soon be running free in their new home.
Keyword-animals

<button
