Wide pan from models on catwalk at end of Two show to Gina and Karen Waldman on runway, lights go out over audience\u003cbr/\u003eSome of South Africa's top designers are aiming to put Johannesburg firmly on the fashion map by merging their talents with those of homegrown craftsmen and women.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"fashion fusion\" scheme celebrates the country's talent for handicrafts by pairing rural artisans with the cream of creators of urban chic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe flurry of activity backstage is just one outward sign of how South Africa is alert to the commercial possibilities of fashion by encouraging local crafts.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the models preparing for the catwalk are showing off the result of a collaboration between designers and small producers, some of whom live vast distances from Johannesburg.\u003cbr/\u003eAs stylists make last minute adjustments to models' hair and make up, the audience waits keenly in anticipation.  \u003cbr/\u003eColleen Eitzen is one of South Africa's most successful female designers.\u003cbr/\u003eShe's showing specially embellished brooches, hand embroidered and beaded by craftsmen in the Western Cape.   \u003cbr/\u003eIt's all grown from the \"Fashion Fusion\" programmed first developed four years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThe aim is to provide local craftspeople with a commercial outlet for their skills and encourage designers to celebrate South Africa's talent for handicrafts.   \u003cbr/\u003eOn the catwalk is Eitzen's Winter 2011 collection.   \u003cbr/\u003eHer designs are based on the strelitzia, a flower also known as the bird of paradise.\u003cbr/\u003eHours of painstaking hand-beading and stitching goes into every piece, turning each one into a potential collector's item.   \u003cbr/\u003eFashion consultant and shop owner Adam Levin is in the front row tonight. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's here to see see what's new and innovative.\u003cbr/\u003eEitzen's new collection proves a triumph with the audience and her trademark brooches and headpieces get a great reception.\u003cbr/\u003eShe believes the fusion scheme makes obvious sense.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think we're mad, I think we're absolutely mad, not to tap into talent, raw and absolute talent, that really is there. can get quite exciting results,\" Levin says.  \u003cbr/\u003eBackstage between shows, the tension is building, and Karen Waldman one of the design duo behind the \"Two\" label, is preparing her models.   \u003cbr/\u003eWaldman says their entire collection is the result of a collaboration with local knitters.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We got our crafters, we got them some wool, and we literally had a craft workshop for three days, where we worked with them, and we just knitted up the most incredible scarves, the most beautiful gloves, and hats,\" she explains.\u003cbr/\u003eWaldman and her sister Gina stock over 50 stores in South Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Waldmans are convinced the pieces made by craftspeople in the Northern Cape will be coveted across the country.   \u003cbr/\u003eDirector of South African Fashion Week Lucilla Booyzen is founder of the Fashion Fusion project.\u003cbr/\u003eShe's certain the idea is now a successful and sustainable commercial reality.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We've fused designers, that have got stores and that are supplying a lot of stores, with crafters so that we can create a sustainable income for the crafter, throughout the
