Wide of Peccioli skyline \u003cbr/\u003eThe human rubbish collector may be a thing of the past with the development of a small green robot that does the rounds of city streets picking up rubbish as it goes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Italian town of Peccioli played host to the launch of this clean and tidy robot, known as DustCart.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is DustCart, a robot designed and built to clean the streets of the town of Peccioli in Tuscany, Italy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe town is the testing ground for a group of Italian robotics experts and their latest offspring.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna University in Pisa has developed this robot that could one day even replace the rubbish man. It's called DustCart and is able to collect small quantities of rubbish on demand. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is part of a European project called DustBot, which began in 2006.  According to the DustBot Web site, the project is aimed at developing improved systems for managing urban waste using robots.\u003cbr/\u003eThis robot has been designed to look friendly so humans will interact with it more comfortably.  \u003cbr/\u003eProject manager Barbara Mazzolai says that the robot has potential to solve rubbish collection in smaller towns where streets are narrow and the surfaces are cobbled and bumpy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe robot uses a Segway system to move, balancing itself on two-wheels.  \u003cbr/\u003eRobotics Department Director at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna University Paolo Dario says the implementation of  the robot-based system will probably be as costly as the truck-based system currently in place, but will be more energy-efficient.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe rubbish robot runs on a silent, lithium battery-powered engine.  It also prompts people to recycle.    \u003cbr/\u003eResidents can contact the robot via telephone or mobile phone.   \u003cbr/\u003eOnce the robot reaches the caller, it asks the user for a personal ID number and a description of the type of trash being handed in, whether organic, recyclable or waste.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe robot then opens its bin, collects the rubbish and takes it to a designated dumping area.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe robot avoids fixed obstacles because of preloaded information on the physical environment.  It safely stops in front of moving objects by receiving inputs from its movement sensors.  \u003cbr/\u003eA central operating system monitors all tasks and sends updated information to the main display screen for users to read.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe electric robot is also equipped with special sensors that monitor air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, ozone, benzene, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and air temperature.  \u003cbr/\u003eDustCart is only a prototype and is still undergoing technical changes to enhance its ability to move on any surface.  For now it can't climb stairs or drive on sloping ground.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the future, motor vehicle law may have to be amended to include mobile robots.  \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Dario says it is yet
