SOUNDBITE (English) Katherine Stout, Exhibition Curator:
" It changes each year and that's what we need to remember that all the artists are different each year and they are at the stage at which they are at in their careers. What this exhibition shows is the incredible strength and diversity that the work that these artists are making. We have Anya Gallaccio who is making work with quite unconventional materials, using flowers and real apples as well as the more traditional materials of bronze. To explore quite big almost cliched themes like the inevitability of the life cycle, desire and repulsion, but doing so in very innovative ways. We have Willie Docherty who's making work using video which is... the work that he is showing here 'Re-Run' which is powerful in his simplicity. There are two screens, one in which depicts a man on a bridge running away from us and the other depicting a man running towards us. It's like a dream sequence film clip and the viewer is forced to quite an uncomfortable position. We are not sure whether we might be in the role of pursuing him or we're not sure if we are egging him on and trying to encourage him and that work speaks of the living in divided societies."
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Katherine Stout, Exhibition Curator:
" Here in the sculpture sex, they have re-made the piece a tableau from the (indecipherable) which is in fact behind you. They have re-made the sculpture using junk shop props and maggots they have found in childrens' shops so it is an over the top representation of death. It's fascinating in its detail, we can't help staring at it. Similarly the other work, Death, represents an over the top, slightly absurd representation of sex. It is so removed from the actual thing that it makes us laugh. Grace and Perry deliberately use their subversive tactics of making works with ceramics which is not identified as a medium used in contemporary art today. He makes very beautiful pots, he spends a long time making them, he makes them very carefully and he uses that medium to tackle again some serious issues."
132. Various shots ceramic pots by Grayson Perry
The UK's top art award, the Turner Prize, has opened amid controversy over its shock value and carrying a "health warning" saying visitors should not bring those under the age of 16.
A pair of blow-up dolls engaged in a sex act and a sculpture of flesh devoured by thousands of maggots are among shocking images in this year's exhibition, unveiled today.
The works - by favourites, the Chapman brothers - go on display to the public at Tate Britain in London on Wednesday.
The duo have also been nominated for the best work at the Royal Academy Summer Show, for 'Marriage of Reason' and 'Squalor I,' an installation which includes a squat figure mounted on a sculptor's turntable and made of bronze painted a glossy brown.
Another contender for the respected prize, Grayson Perry - a cross-dressing potter - also features sex acts, genitals and death in his exhibits of ceramic vases.
The annual exhibition of the four nominees, inevitably creates a storm of controversy due to its content.
Jake and Dinos Chapman, have updated an earlier work, 'Great Deeds Against the Dead,' created nine years ago and depicting mutilated bodies hanging from a tree.
For the new work 'Sex,' the figures are seen after being eaten by a variety of creepy-crawlies with maggots, snails, spiders and rats seen picking off their skin.
Another work, 'Death' depicts two blow-up dolls using a vibrator and lying on a lilo. However there is more than meets the eye as the sculpture is actually a bronze cast realistically painted.
Perry deals with issues such as child abuse in his ceramic works, taking an ancient art form but glazing uncomfortable images and messages on to his pots.
They include 'A Tradition of Bitterness,' which shows images of two suburban homes alongside the silhouetted figure of a man who has hanged himself and another with an erection who is being beaten by a woman.
Several of his pots include figures of young girls in doll-like dresses. Perry himself often wears such outfits when he dresses as his alter-ego, Claire. One of his elaborately embroidered garments, titled 'Coming Out Dress,' is on display.
The other shortlisted artists are Willie Doherty who is showing his video work 'Re-Run' in which a man is seen running across a bridge from two angles and the images are projected on to to facing screens.
Anya Gallacio has created a number of exhibits which will rot over the duration of the exhibition which lasts until January 18. believe it is elitist and unrepresentative of "real" art.
Last year the ÂŁ20,000 prize was dismissed as "conceptual bullshit" by the then culture minister, Kim Howells.
