By the time they are shifted it becomes very difficult, the morbidity and mortality also increases because these babies become hypothermic throughout, the temperature goes down, they may develop hypoglycaemia, they may develop metabolic acidosis, the incidence goes up,\" he adds. \u003cbr/\u003eThe team at Surya Hospital carried out a study to compare the use of polythene versus routine care and its impact on infant body temperature during neonatal transport. \u003cbr/\u003eOut of 101 preterm infants, 50 were wrapped in polythene and 51 in sterile cloth right after delivery, before being transported from maternity homes to Neonatal Intensive Care Units. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen body temperatures were taken, results showed that the average body temperature of infants wrapped in polythene were significantly higher than that of those wrapped in sterile cloth. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a 2014 report by the All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), neonatal mortality rate in India stands at 29 per 1000 live births.\u003cbr/\u003eThe method of wrapping pre term babies in polythene aims to achieve a decline in this figure.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe polythene wrap method is also being used with babies who are born with a low body weight.\u003cbr/\u003eSuch babies are also at risk of hypothermia. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors say the sheets are particularly helpful as a first step of treatment for babies born in remote areas. \u003cbr/\u003e\"So when transport facilities, transport incubators, transport ambulances are not available, any health care worker or parent can wrap the baby in plastic followed by a sterile cloth, and then transfer, the temperature of the baby will be maintained better,\" says Nandkishor Kabra, another neonatologist at Surya Hospital.   \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors in Mumbai endorse the polythene wrap method not only because it can prevent an array of complications in pre term babies, but also because polythene is a cheap, easily available material.\u003cbr/\u003eIn India, a sheet of plastic large enough to wrap an infant costs less than 1 US dollar.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you use a polythene wrap and a cloth, probably we are giving a better chance to the baby to survive, probably better chance for the baby to maintain temperature, probably better chance for the baby to maintain the sugar.
