The costume is crudely painted but historians agree that the finely painted face is by Leonardo. What is certain is that this a portrait of a young man deep in thought.
The subject of "The Lady with the Ermine", Cecilia Gallerani is shown as turning, perhaps flirtatiously, towards an unseen viewer. Historians believe that the viewer was her lover, Duke Ludovico himself.
Leonardo was notoriously impatient, driven by a restless energy. That meant many of his paintings were never finished.
But restoration and unfinished parts of paintings reveal a lot about his working methods, says Larry Keith, Director of Conservation at the National:
"One of the interesting things about Leonardo's career is the fact that so many of his paintings are unfinished, as we know, and from the point of view of understanding how he painted however, it's a sort of hidden blessing. The two paintings were the result and comparisons reveal much about Leonardo's methods.
Forensic detective work continues to reveal some of Leonardo's secret history.
Leonardo scholarship is constantly shifting - and the last painting in the exhibition is a newly attributed canvas.
Scholars seem to be in agreement but "Christ as the Saviour of the World" is so different to other Leonardo paintings that the final verdict is yet to come. This show is a chance for the rest of us to decide says Luke Syson:
"Behind me is Leonardo's newly rediscovered painting of the Salvator Mundi, it's just turned up and this is the very first time that the public will have a chance to assess this attribution which scholars have agreed upon but now is the time for us all to decide: Is this really by Leonardo?"
Once again, painstaking restoration has revealed previously unseen subtleties that point to the painting being made by Leonardo.
Besides Leonardo's own work there are examples by his assistants and followers including an early copy of "The Last Supper" by his pupil Giampietrino. It's the best indication of how the famous fresco would have looked shortly after Leonardo completed the commission. In fact it was used as a guide for the restorers of the mural in Milan.
But it's the work that is indisputably by Leonardo's hand that make this the must-see exhibition of the
