Wide of news conference\u003cbr/\u003eProtesters gathered outside the headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to demonstrate against the exclusion of farmers from a summit on the global food crisis which kicked off in Rome. \u003cbr/\u003eThe FAO has said the three-day summit starting on Tuesday will provide a \"historic chance\" to relaunch the fight against hunger and poverty and boost agricultural production in developing countries.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the UN agency, an estimated 850 (m) million people in the world suffer from hunger, most of them in developing countries. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, there have been complaints from protest groups and non-governmental organisations that the summit does not provide a voice to those directly affected by the issues being discussed at the talks.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Today all the heads of state are gathered at FAO, and they receive leaders of industries, allowed to enter the FAO. Campesina along with other activist groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are also protesting the impact of the large-scale production of biofuels the strain on crop and forest land.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The heads of state want to ask the leaders of industry to keep imposing their seeds and their biotechnology, but those things are not the solution, they just make the problem worse,\" Kastler said. \u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalists, who once hailed biofuels as a key factor in climate change policy, now believe their production is encouraging deforestation. \u003cbr/\u003eThe diversion of food crops such as canola, corn, soybeans and sugarcane to biofuels also is one factor blamed for the sharp rise in food prices over the past year.\u003cbr/\u003eCritics also say biofuel production threatens biodiversity and water supplies and may accelerate global warming, as rain forests, and other ecosystems that store carbon are destroyed to make way for fields. \u003cbr/\u003eBiofuels also require pesticides and fertilisers that produce greenhouse gases.\u003cbr/\u003eA number of activist organisations and NGOs have gathered in Rome to hold their own, four-day parallel conference, called Terra Preta (\"Dark Soil\") to voice their demands on how to overcome the crisis.  \u003cbr/\u003eThey are calling for a \"radical shift in agriculture policies\" that would help small-scale farmers to feed themselves and the populations of their countries.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the NGOs and activists taking part in the alternative summit believe that food sovereignty and sustainable family farming and food production are the solution to the global crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), held a news conference to condemn Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's participation in the FAO summit. \u003cbr/\u003e\"What makes us sad is European Union's insistence on continuing a policy of leniency and concessions towards the Iranian regime,\" NCRI Belgium representative Abolghassen Rezaii, said at the news conference. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Ahmadinejad must be put on trial and condemned for his crimes against humanity,\" he added. \u003cbr/\u003eThe NCRI is a political umbrella coalition of opposition political organisations, representing the Iranian resistance movement in
