McNamara and World  Bank President Barber B. Conable, Jr.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Americans praised China's progress over the last 25 years and presented  condolences for China's paramount leader Deng Xiaoping, who died recently.\u003cbr/\u003eBut China's Foreign Minister, while observing diplomatic niceties, did not pull his  punches during a press conference, warning the United States against future  cooperation and exchanges with Taiwan. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The key point for steadily developing the Sino-U-S relationship is the Taiwan question.  The Taiwan issue concerns the sovereignty and territorial integrity and directly involves  the national spirit of China's 1-point-2  (b) billion people. The Joint Communiques\u003cbr/\u003esigned by China and the United States provide guiding principles for handling Taiwan  issues.
