Marshall and Robin Warren have won the 2005 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for showing that bacteria, not stress, is the main cause of painful stomach ulcers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe announcement of the prize was made by Professor Hans Jรถrvall, Secretary of the Nobel Assembly, in Stockholm on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 1982 discovery transformed peptic ulcer disease from a chronic, frequently disabling condition to one that can be cured by a short regiment of antibiotics and other medicines, the Nobel Prize committee said.\u003cbr/\u003e68-year-old Warren and 54-year-old Marshall found that Helicobacter pylori played a role in gastritis and peptic ulcers.\u003cbr/\u003eWarren, a pathologist from Perth, Australia, observed small curved bacteria colonising the lower part of the stomach in about 50 percent of patients from which biopsies had been taken, the Nobel Assembly said. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was said to have made the crucial observation that signs of inflammation were always present in the gastric mucosa close to where the bacteria were seen.\u003cbr/\u003eMarshall became interested in Warren's findings and together they initiated a study of biopsies from 100 patients. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter several attempts, Marshall succeeded in cultivating a hitherto unknown bacterial species - later denoted Helicobacter pylori - from several of these biopsies, the assembly said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe medicine prize is awarded by the Karolinska institute in Stockholm as stated in the will of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish industrialist who founded the prestigious awards in 1895.\u003cbr/\u003eThe final decision on the medicine prize was taken by the institute's Nobel Assembly.\u003cbr/\u003eThe coveted award honouring achievements in medical research opened this year's series of prize announcements, and was due to be be followed by physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics.\u003cbr/\u003eThe process for selecting winners is extremely secretive with nominations kept sealed for 50 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe medicine prize includes a cheque for 10 (m) million Kronor - equivalent to 1.3 (m) million US dollars - a diploma, gold medal and a handshake
