And as you know that it is an endemic (confined to one place) species, so it is present only in certain narrow pockets. Though the population has dwindled, mainly because of the encroachment, especially the plantations, the tea plantations. hills of the Western Ghats are carpeted in purple flowers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Western Ghats, the lofty mountain ranges in southern India, are witnessing one of the most eagerly awaited phenomena for nature lovers - the spectacular blooming of the Neelakurinji flower.  \u003cbr/\u003eEvery 12 years, Kerala's famed tea plantation region plays host to the Neelakurinji (botanical name: Strobilanthes kunthiana), a species of flowering shrub that blooms in the high altitudes.\u003cbr/\u003e'Neela' means blue in the Malayalam language and 'Kurinji' is the local name of the flower.\u003cbr/\u003eNeelakurinji is the best known of a genus that has flowering cycles ranging from one to 16 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mass flowering and then subsequent death of this rare flower is the subject of hill folklore.\u003cbr/\u003eThe last flowering of Neelakurinji was in 1994 and the peak of its 2006 flowering is currently under way.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Nair from the Department of Botany at the University of Kerala says the plant is very special.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Eravikulam National Park whole hillsides of native grasslands and evergreen forests are carpeted in mauve (light purple) flowers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe park is also the natural habitat of the endangered 'Niligiri Tahr', a rare species of mountain goat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mass flowering of Neelakurinji has induced a tourism boom in Munnar, a hill area rich in biodiversity and situated about 1600 meters (0.9 miles) above sea level.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors queue up outside the national park to catch a glimpse of the Neelakurinji.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is estimated that over 5-thousand people come to the region every day to have a look at the sea of the rare flowers.\u003cbr/\u003eOne such visitor Mr Singh says he is having a wonderful time.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Neelakurinji plant is commonly found growing in grassland and is a unique botanical feature of the southern Western Ghats.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this area is also home to some of India's famous tea plantations and botanists fear the plantations, and increasing human habitation,  could spell trouble for Neelakurinji.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Nair says the plant's ecosystem could be under threat because of the expansion of commercial enterprises.\u003cbr/\u003eWildlife warden Roy Thomas says efforts are being made to conserve Neelakurinji and other native grasslands species.\u003cbr/\u003eThe flowering of Neelakurinji also means there is a large increase in the number of bees found in its vicinity.\u003cbr/\u003eImmense quantities of honey soon become available after the rock bees and common hill bees visit the plant. \u003cbr/\u003eHoney-hunters know that an excellent honey, which is much sought after by honey connoisseurs, is produced in the years when Neelakurinji flowers.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities at the Eravikulam National Park say that the last two Neelakurinji seasons led to widespread destruction of the rare flower by the visiting public. \u003cbr/\u003eThis time around, park officials have deployed security and forest patrols throughout the park to make sure no one gets
