These two...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eYou will have heard of bull fighting, and maybe even cock fighting, but how about beetle fighting?\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a traditional form of entertainment in Thailand and is being celebrated at a special festival. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a battle of the beetles. \u003cbr/\u003eThese two male Siamese rhinoceros beetles are facing off in a fight - fuelled by the scent of a female tucked in a hole below them. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a popular pass-time during the rainy season in Thailand. \u003cbr/\u003eRungrueng Chaisin is farmer who cultivates corn and bamboo in Pua, a town in the north of the country. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's been pitting 'kwang', the local term for beetles, against each other since he was a young boy. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's in my soul that whenever the (rainy) season comes, that we have to search for 'kwang' and select 'kwang' for a fight.  We have done this for generations, since we were young, and since our grandparents (time),\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eRungrueng has about 50 kwangs this year - and he trains them to fight ahead of the town's annual Kwang festival held every September.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year's event kicks off with a parade, which includes several northern hill tribe groups.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're marching and dancing while wearing colourful ethnic costumes alongside floats featuring giant kwang effigies.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe festival, which started out more than a decade ago, is all about celebrating the beetle fighting tradition. \u003cbr/\u003eBy nightfall, when the dancing is over, the fighting begins. \u003cbr/\u003eA group of men have gathered to see their kwangs lock horns. \u003cbr/\u003eThe battleground is a log which is less than a metre long. \u003cbr/\u003eThe beetle owners use thin rods with steel clips that makes a noise to stimulate the fighters.\u003cbr/\u003eBeing lifted by the opponent does not mean that a kwang has lost the tournament, but retreating back to its end of the log or refusing to fight after a few tries does.  \u003cbr/\u003eBeetle fighting bets range from 200 baht, or six dollars, up to 10,000 baht, or approximately US dollars 330, depending on how good the competing beetles are.\u003cbr/\u003eJirayuth Inchai has been fascinated with beetles since he was 10-years-old.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe has 20 of them this season and has won the first fight of the night, winning a bet of 300 baht (10 US dollars), for a beetle that he bought for only 20 baht (60 cents).\u003cbr/\u003e\"The men go through several processes of selections and thoughts before they can find the best 'kwang.'  Having the best 'kwang' also means they can earn more money (through betting),\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eFor kwang keepers like Adul Natethip, beetle fighting season means turning his motorcycle repair shop into a spa of sorts for the six-legged creatures.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe patiently squeezes sugar cane juice for the bugs to enjoy in preparation for battle.\u003cbr/\u003eAdul has 20 kwangs left, selected from an initial 80 at the start of the season - which began in July.  \u003cbr/\u003eSome of his fighters can be seen tied to sugar canes hanging on motorcycle tyres in his shop.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I put them on sugar cane, then let them eat until they are full,\" he says Adul.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Then, I will compare the size (with other kwangs) before I put them on a challenge for one or two rounds to see which one will be a good fighter. After that, I put them into more challenges until they get better. Once I find the best one, I will keep it for the festival.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePisut Ek-Amnuay is an entomologist who has authored several books and literature about the bugs of Thailand.    \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that a kwang's total life span is only about twelve months, with ten of those spent in the larval stage, so adult beetles have only a couple of months left to live.\u003cbr/\u003ePisut says that size is the most important factor for selecting a Siamese rhinoceros beetle, also known as Xylotrupes gideon. \u003cbr/\u003eThe male fighting beetles range from four to six centimetres in length.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It must be big with the long upper horn that has two prongs. This makes it look formidable,\" says Pisut.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The horns should not hamper its movement. The lower horn will support the upper horn for the 'kwang' to be able to grip, help in the gripping process. It will have an opportunity to lift up the enemy.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn Pua, many of the beetles are harvested in nearby forests by children who sell them to traders like Saroj Aupachak.\u003cbr/\u003eFighting beetles are sold for about 200 baht each (six dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eBut Saroj says there are not as many available these days. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In the past, I used to find two buckets full of them, but these days I can't even collect one hundred before the festival.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the night fights has drawn the attention of an American family.\u003cbr/\u003eOdell Summer watched the parade and is witnessing beetle fighting for the first time, along with his wife and three sons.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I find them pretty fascinating,\" says Joshua Summer.\u003cbr/\u003eThe kwang festival in Pua lasts for a week.\u003cbr/\u003eThe highlight is 100 fighting pairs of beetles on Saturday, along with a kwang beauty pageant.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce the festival is over, many of the beetle keepers will allow the male bugs to mate with females before they are returned back into the wild.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television \u003cbr/\u003ePua, Thailand - 24 September 2013\u003cbr/\u003e1.
