Wide of Ichihara and staff riding \"Winglet\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest version of Toyota's personal mobility device is being tested on public streets in Japan. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Winglet, which is similar to the Segway, a scooter-like device that people ride standing up. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's small enough for three people to stand on it inside an elevator, or to ride it in a building.\u003cbr/\u003eToyota's latest \"Winglet\"  is a personal mobility device, which Toyota describe as a personal mobility robot. \u003cbr/\u003eA common definition of a robot is a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically.\u003cbr/\u003eTherefore, Toyota say the self-balancing system on the Winglet means it can be called a 'robot'.  \u003cbr/\u003eWhen the unit is first started and during use, it maintains the balance of the passenger and the device, and automatically responds to changes in occupants' orientation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe machine can also be used outside, as long you don't forget to wear a helmet.\u003cbr/\u003eThis model is more compact than first one unveiled in 2008: it's 1.2 meters tall, it's 48 centimetres in width and 50 in depth (front to back).\u003cbr/\u003eSome might say it's quite similar to a \"Segway\" but there are a few differences.\u003cbr/\u003eIt only weighs 19.7 kilograms, what makes it much smaller when compared to a \"Segway\" which can weigh as much as 47 kilos.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the other hand, its top speed is only 6km/h  (4miles/h) - about the same speed as a pedestrian - far slower than the 20 km/h (12 miles / h) \"Segway\". \u003cbr/\u003eEach battery charge can run the Winglet for a distance of around 4 kilometres (2.5 miles).\u003cbr/\u003eDevelopers say the slower speed and compact size makes it safer, easier to manoeuvre, and more suitable for riding in crowded cities like Tokyo.\u003cbr/\u003eKenichi Ichihara is the Mayor of Tsukuba City (located around 60km/ 37 miles Northeast of Tokyo). \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the \"winglet\" is easy to drive \"It's similar to skiing.  It moves by shifting your weight and curves by moving your arms.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe device is also designed to stop easily with little pressure, and respond to body movements - such as moving forward when leaning to the front.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's still no estimated date for this motorised stand-up-and-ride scooter to be on sale as it is still being tested.\u003cbr/\u003eEighty members of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Japanese public research institution) and employees of Tsukuba City Hall will use the \"Winglet\" to commute to and from the office, and for other transportation needs.\u003cbr/\u003eIchihara, says his city offers wide streets and open space for testing but he also hopes these trials will take the city closer to becoming more eco-friendly.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that if people start using these types of transport, we can create a low-carbon city, a safe city, and one that does not rely on cars\" Ichihara says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe device is powered by a lithium-ion battery, which means there are no emissions from the vehicle. \u003cbr/\u003eThe battery takes one hour to charge and has a range of about 10 km/ six miles on a full charge. \u003cbr/\u003eIn many countries, \"Segways\" and other personal mobility devices are a common sight on the streets, whether they're being used as police patrol vehicle or as a tourist ride.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Japan has yet to legalise the usage of these vehicles on public roads.\u003cbr/\u003eFor now, the \"Winglet\" is being tested in Tsukuba City's Mobility Robot Experimental Zone, an area designated for the \"Winglet\" (and other vehicles) road testing.\u003cbr/\u003eToyota and the city authorities hope these test trials will help confirming \"Winglet's\" safety, and ease road regulations for these devices.\u003cbr/\u003eAkifumi Tamaoki is the General Manager of Partner Robot Division at Toyota Motor Corporation and he says it might take a while for people to accept these machines as a way of transport.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"Bicycles have a history and that is why they are permitted on public streets.
