soybeans for a seemingly insatiable Asian market.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Argentina's tax-hungry government has sparked its own brand of food crisis, a row with farmers, as it seeks to tap a windfall from soaring global food commodity prices.\u003cbr/\u003eAs world food prices cause civil unrest in poor, food-importing countries, nations with large exportable farm surpluses like Argentina are facing reaped Argentina some US$13.5 billion (�8.5 billion) last year.\u003cbr/\u003eSoy growers in Ferre, a town of 3,000 people on farmlands of Buenos Aires province, are insisting the government roll back taxes that they say will hamper economic growth in the countryside.\u003cbr/\u003eFarmers like Carlos Ranalli who watches freshly harvest soybeans pour into a truck leaving his 400-hectare (nearly 1,000-acre) spread.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that a lot of money has been invested in soybeans production here. \u003cbr/\u003eRanalli says that the crop needs a lot of attention so it does not get infested with weeds. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever President Cristina Fernandez has called soybeans a \"weed\" and said farmers must share gains from a crop that is almost entirely exported.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials say the soy boom has gotten out-of-hand and that taxes will encourage farmers to grow other crops.\u003cbr/\u003eOver half of Argentina's farmland is planted in soybeans each year, more than double a decade ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThis means that normal agricultural practices like crop rotation are ignored. \u003cbr/\u003eSoy producer Sergio Fernandez says that the soy harvest is now showing the signs of damage as the same fields are planted with the crop year after year. \u003cbr/\u003eHernan Giardini, a Greenpeace activist and soy expert says that chemicals used to protect the soy beans from weeds means that farmers are working with harmful substances and the ecosystem's natural balance is being upset. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also says that lack of crop rotation increases desertification of certain areas as the land is depleted of its natural components like nitrates. \u003cbr/\u003eFarmers are especially unhappy about President Cristina Fernandez upping export taxes in soybeans from an existing 35 percent to almost 46 percent, possibly more if commodity prices rise further.\u003cbr/\u003eFarmer Maraino Piergalini says the soy harvest helps to subsidise his dairy farm. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the president insists export taxes are vital to redistributing profits to less fortunate Argentines and to encourage more production of corn, wheat and meat, food that can be eaten at home.\u003cbr/\u003eWith 1980s hyperinflation still a vivid memory, officials have periodically reigned in exports of meat and grain and used high export taxes to keep down domestic prices.\u003cbr/\u003eSince 2005, authorities have struck costly price accords with meatpackers, dairy producers, bakers and others, in a bid to curb domestic inflation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe farmers suspended their strike on April 2, but many insist they won't back down.\u003cbr/\u003eThe proliferation of soybeans is a trend seen also in parts of Brazil,
