There hasn't been any land in Moscow for a long time already, and that's why  we have all these cemeteries out in the regions, where there is more land.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Anatoly Prohorov, Moscow burial chief \u003cbr/\u003eBut even beyond the city limits supplies are scarce.\u003cbr/\u003eThis cemetery in the Moscow region opened in 1978 and was filled to capacity within  eight years.\u003cbr/\u003eSo to make more room, the city bought an additional 10 hectares of land in a nearby  forest -- avoiding another graveyard crisis for several more years.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the Novodevichi cemetery.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is the final destination for Russia's elite.\u003cbr/\u003eFamous Russian writers like Nikolai Gogol and Anton Chekhov, Communist Party  leader Nikita Khruschev and a myriad of war heroes and generals rest peacefully under  these trees.\u003cbr/\u003eBut even Moscow's most prestigious cemetery is short of burial plots. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cemetery is only a few years from reaching full capacity, and months go by  between burials on the cemetery's precious unused land.  \u003cbr/\u003ePeople who want to share the same grave as their relatives are usually buried on top of  other family members for optimal use of space.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Russian)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have the right to re-use a plot every 15 years for new burials. So we get sort of a  layered cake over 300 years -- 15 years, a body, then another 15 years, and another 15  years -- so we can find 10 to 12 dead people in one grave.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Anatoly Prohorov, Moscow burial chief\u003cbr/\u003eAt the city's biggest embalming center, the staff have trouble keeping up with the  demand.\u003cbr/\u003eIn this room skilled workers are putting the finishing touches to a corpse.\u003cbr/\u003eThe center is facing a cash crisis, and doesn't even possess its own embalming  equipment.\u003cbr/\u003eEmbalmers have to improvise, and instead of using a machine to do the job, they use  syringes, catheters and plastic tubes.\u003cbr/\u003eThey prepare up to 20 bodies a day -- sometimes the load is so great they have to work  overnight.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Russian)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We constantly have to seek out new ways to work, we have to invent our own  methods.  We've stopped embalming in the classical way with an embalming machine,  and today we have nothing but our own devices to work.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Vladimir Obelmakov, undertaker\u003cbr/\u003eTo counter the shortage of space and to make money , a private cemetery opened for  business last year.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough it charges more money than the average three hundred and fifty dollars a state  cemetery would ask for, clients can be assured that when the time comes, they'll have  a plot ready for eternity.\u003cbr/\u003eState deregulation has also spawned a boom in the cremation industry, although the  Russian Orthodox Church is opposed to it.\u003cbr/\u003e60 percent of Moscow's corpses are now cremated and Russian undertakers are trying  to encourage more families to do so.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that's only a partial solution for those willing to opt for this end. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough municipal authorities recently purchased additional land from several collective  farms in the Moscow region to  be transformed into grave sites, officials have to plan  ahead to find more space for the 140-thousand Muscovites who die every year.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil then, their final journey promises to be a difficult and complicated one.\u003cbr/\u003eMoscow, Russia, March 24-29, 1997 and file\u003cbr/\u003e1.
