Exterior of Zimbabwean embassy\u003cbr/\u003eAs far as Zimbabwe's ambassador to the United Nations is concerned, last week's elections in his country were democratic, President Robert Mugabe was elected, and any talk of further sanctions is a \"non-issue\" and the United Nations should let Africans take care of African issues.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking to the Associated Press in New York on Monday, Boniface Guwa Chidyausiku, a former lieutenant in Zimbabwe's Liberation Army, said the recent calls from the U.S. and European leaders for sanctions would not make him \"lose sleep.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"They have no case to justify that before the Security Council. Really, if they are honest, there is no case to ask the Security Council to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe. Security Council this week, and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown urged the African Union (A.U.) to reject the result of Zimbabwe's presidential runoff.\u003cbr/\u003eMugabe was the sole candidate in Friday's vote. Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai withdrew, saying his supporters had become targets of brutal state-sponsored violence.\u003cbr/\u003eChidyausiku said that he expected that if and when the U.S. or U.K. asked the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions, other members of the Council would not allow the proposal to pass.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The South Africans and the Chinese, I think they are very objective. They are looking at the issues. We don't have a quarrel with South Africa. We don't have any quarrel with the Chinese, so they are more objective. Whereas, when you look at the U.K. and the United States and members of the European Union, they are in one, you know, they are synchronising their actions based on our quarrel on the land issue between us and the United Kingdom,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eChina is one of five countries with veto power on the Security Council, and could block any move for sanctions.\u003cbr/\u003eChidyausiku did not directly respond to questions about government-sponsored violence which targeted  the Zimbabwe's opposition party, nor did he think there was a need for any peacekeepers in his country. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, the ambassador said, the discussions between Mugabe's party and the opposition should continue.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt, at the opening of a summit of African leaders, U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro called for African leaders to help negotiations, but Chidyausiku said he did not understand that call.\u003cbr/\u003e\"My government is quite happy with the mediation of President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa. And he is president of Zimbabwe. He was elected by over two million people. There is nothing that can change that. They might wish otherwise but the reality on the ground - he is the president of Zimbabwe,\" the ambassador said.\u003cbr/\u003eZimbabwe already is subject to a number of bilateral sanctions - mostly travel bans or related to the importation of arms. \u003cbr/\u003eMugabe's government has claimed that these are part of a plot to \"recolonise\" the country, and that they are responsible for the
