Drawing of the pagoda when complete \u003cbr/\u003eA Buddhist monument is being built near the Mumbai coast in India to educate people about Buddhist teachings and provide a place for the monks and devotees to meditate.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Golden Global Pagoda is being constructed by the Global Vipassana Foundation in traditional Burmese design as a symbol of gratitude to monks in Myanmar who preserved the Vipassana form of meditation through the ages.\u003cbr/\u003eAn architectural marvel, the centre of the  Golden Global Pagoda contains the world's largest stone dome with an inner diameter of  85.15 meters (279.363 feet), built without any supporting pillars. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is being built with a combination of ancient Indian and modern technology to enable it to last for thousands of years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe planned height of the structure is 96.12 meters (315.354 feet), which is nearly twice the size of the previously largest hollow stone monument in the world, the Gol Gumbaz Dome in Bijapur in South India.\u003cbr/\u003eWith an octagonal base, the pagoda externally rises and tapers at the top through a circular bell shape.\u003cbr/\u003eThe inside of the pagoda is hollow and serves as a very large meditation hall, enough to accommodate 8, 000 people.\u003cbr/\u003eM M Khandhar, the associate architect on the project says the pagoda structure is both functional and innovative in design.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe pillarless dome is made of thousands of Jodhpur stones, each weighing about 600-700 kilograms (1 322.773 - 1 543.235 pounds) suspended without any external support.\u003cbr/\u003eThe construction engineers have used an interlocking principle of one stone gripping and holding another to lock the massive stones into place. \u003cbr/\u003eStones have grooves cut both horizontally and vertically, designed to interlock in both directions .\u003cbr/\u003eFounder of the project, S.N. Goenka, a former businessman turned spiritual guru explains that the global pagoda is a replica of the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon (Rangoon) in Myanmar (Burma), also known as the 'Land of Golden Pagodas '. \u003cbr/\u003eIts a gesture of thanks to monks in Myanmar who have preserved the Vipassana form of meditation through the ages.\u003cbr/\u003ePagodas, also known as Stupas, were originally erected as memorials to Buddha. The custom of building such memorials dates back to very ancient times in India. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the discourse recording the last days of the Buddha, it is mentioned that ten stupas or pagodas were constructed to house his remains.\u003cbr/\u003eHistorical records show that Emperor Asoka built more than 80,000 stupas between 273-232 BC, each containing a relic taken from the original ten. \u003cbr/\u003eThe best preserved of these stupas are at Sanchi in central India, where the relics of the Buddha's chief disciples were found.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the relics are also kept at Sarnath in Northern India, where Buddha began his teachings.\u003cbr/\u003eIn October 2006, a selection of relics were enshrined in the central locking stone of the Global pagoda dome.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pagoda is being constructed based on the belief that people should meditate in a large congregation.\u003cbr/\u003eGoenka conducts meditation training sessions in the Vipassana tradition which is practiced by  monitoring breath and neutrally observing mental turbulence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe technique claims to rid the mind of anger, hatred and other negative emotions.\u003cbr/\u003eGoenka says the Buddhist philosophy and Vipassana meditation do not require any religious conversion and that it provides a universal teaching only for the eradication of suffering and inner peace through mind-purification.\u003cbr/\u003eHe believes that those who meditate under the dome can benefit from the the powerful vibrations emanating from Buddha's relics.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Global Pagoda complex is still under construction with plans to include a museum depicting the life and teaching of Buddha. \u003cbr/\u003eArtists from Myanmar have already contributed paintings of the teachings of Buddha that will be kept in the museum. \u003cbr/\u003eThe work is due to be completed by the end of the year when the Pagoda is expected to become one of Asia's major tourist
