Mid of Pope Francis in a procession to the altar in St Peter's square holding a palm
On February 131th 2013 Pope Benedict XVI presided over the Ash Wednesday Mass at St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
The pontiff used his sermon to speak about his coming resignation and thanked the Catholic faithful.
"This is a propitious moment to thank everyone, particularly the faithful of the Rome diocese, as I am about to leave the ministry of Peter, and to ask for a special thought in your prayers," he said.
During the service, a cardinal placed ash on the Pope's head in the shape of a cross, a traditional Catholic ritual on Ash Wednesday.
He, in turn, placed ash on the heads of cardinals.
The event ended on a note of high emotion as cardinals removed their hats as a gesture of deep respect.
The pope stood with his hands together to acknowledge sustained applause from the congregation.
As the pope made his exit, helped down the altar steps by two aides, the basilica erupted in a standing ovation.
The Ash Wednesday mass is normally held at a church elsewhere in Rome, but was switched at the last minute to St Peter's.
The Vatican said this was to accommodate the larger crowds expected as a result of the Pope's decision to resign.
But it also spared the Pontiff from the traditional procession from St Peter's to the church.
Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent, the most solemn season in the church calendar that ends with Holy Week, when the faithful commemorate the death of Christ and his resurrection on Easter Sunday.
By this Easter, on 31th March, the church will likely have a new pope.
On February 14th Pope Benedict XVI held a meeting with several thousand priests living and studying in Rome, as questions mounted about the pontiff's health and continued influence over the next pope.
For a second day, Benedict sent very pointed messages to his successor and the cardinals who will elect him about the direction the church must take once he is no longer pope.
While these remarks have been clearly labelled as Benedict's swansong before retiring, his influence after retirement remains the subject of intense debate.
The annual encounter with Roman priests took on poignant new meaning with Benedict's impending resignation.
Walking with a cane, the pope received another standing ovation from thousands of clerics gathered in the Vatican's main audience hall.
Cardinal Agostino Vallini, Vicar General of Rome told the pope that the church was "feeling a mixture of sentiments, sadness and respect, admiration and homesickness."
"Even if I am retiring now, I always will be close to you in prayers, and I am sure you will be close to me even if for the world I will stay hidden," the pope said.
Benedict reflected on his personal experiences as a young theological expert attending the Second Vatican Council - Vatican II - the 1962-65 meetings that brought the Catholic Church into the modern world.
The pope has spent much of his eight-year pontificate seeking to correct what he considers the misinterpretation of Vatican II, insisting that it wasn't a revolutionary break from the past, as liberal Catholics paint it, but a renewal and reawakening of the best traditions of the ancient church.
He nailed that point home on Thursday, blaming botched media reporting of the council's deliberations for having reduced the work to "political power struggles between various currents in the church."
Because the media's interpretation was more accessible than that of the council participants themselves, the media's version fuelled the popular understanding of what the council was all about, Benedict said.
In what will be one of his final public remarks as pope, Benedict said he hoped the "true council" will be understood.
Father John Wauck, an Opus Dei priest and professor at University of Holy Cross in Rome, interpreted the speech as a message to the young clergy to fulfil the real point of the council:
"That is what he wants to see and that is what he will be praying for once he retires," he said.
Stepping out from the audience, once such young priest, father Emanuele Di Marco, said the Pope was still leading the church and behaving "as a teacher."
Benedict's resignation on February 28th creates an awkward situation - the first in 600 years - in which the Catholic Church will have a reigning pope and a retired one.
The Vatican has insisted that Benedict will cease to be pope at exactly 8 pm local time (1900GMT) on the historic day, devoting himself entirely to a life of prayer.
But on February 14th the Vatican confirmed that Benedict's trusted private secretary, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, 56, would remain his secretary and live with Benedict in his retirement home in the Vatican gardens - as well as remain prefect of the new pope's household.
That dual role would seem to bolster concerns expressed privately by some cardinals that Benedict, by living inside the Vatican, with Gaenswein still working in the Apostolic Palace as an aide to Benedict's successor, would continue to exert at least some Vatican influence.
Asked about this apparent conflict, the Vatican spokesman, the Reverend Federico Lombardi said that the prefect's job is very technical, organising the pope's audiences.
Also on February 14th, Lombardi confirmed that Benedict had hit his head during his March 2012 trip to Mexico but denied that it played any "relevant" role in his decision to resign.
The Vatican newspaper has said the Pope decided to step down after the exhausting trip, which also took the pontiff to Cuba.
La Stampa newspaper reported on Thursday that Benedict had hit his head on the sink when he got up in the middle of the night in an unfamiliar bedroom in Leon, Mexico.
Blood stained his hair, pillow and carpet, the report said. No one outside the pope's inner circle knew, the report said, because the cut was neither deep nor serious and covered by his skullcap.
Lombardi confirmed the injury but said it was "not relevant" during the trip, nor to the pope's decision to step down.
The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano reported earlier in the week that Benedict had taken the decision to resign after the Mexico-Cuba trip, which was physically exhausting for the 85-year-old pope.
Benedict also fell and broke his right wrist in 2009 during a late-night fall in the unfamiliar bedroom of his Alpine vacation home.
Security was tight on February 27th around the pope's summer residence of Castel Gandolfo, as the small Italian town was getting ready to receive its most important visitor.
Benedict will meet with cardinals for a final time on the morning of February 28th , then fly by helicopter to the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome where he is expected to be greeted by thousands of people.
Benedict is scheduled to arrive at 8:00pm (19:00 GMT), when the doors of the palazzo will close and the Swiss Guards in attendance will go off duty, their service protecting the head of the Catholic Church over - for now.
Stefano Gamberi, a resident of Castel Gandolfo, said at first not everyone warmed to Pope Benedict: "I think after years people understood he was very kind and very close to people. More than they expected (him) to be."
Father Pietro Diletti, priest of the local church in Castel Gandolfo, was also excited with the news of the event.
"We are getting ready for the pope's arrival, as we have always done, but this time we hope it will be much bigger, to show our love, our affection, our solidarity for the Pope after this gesture he made," Father Diletti said, referring to the Pope's resignation.
Castel Gandolfo has for centuries been the summer residence of Popes.
No special reconstruction of the complex has been made for the arrival of outgoing Pope Benedict XVI.
On March 14th Rome woke up to a new era of the Catholic Church after March 13th's election of the first Latin American Pope.
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, and former Archbishop of Buenos Aires, became the new pontiff, and took the name of Francis I.
"He'll be a great pontiff. Restoring the church with the name of Francis is a beautiful beginning. We are happy and touched. Our prayers have found a place in God's heart," said Vatican employee Father Nunzio.
Italian newspapers led with the news of the election, as pilgrims recounted their joy at witnessing the historic event.
"We thought we were not going to see him. Look! We are leaving Rome. But thank God we saw him," said Jordania Mendoza, from Venezuela.
Another pilgrim, Ivan Marsura from Italy, noticed the new pope didn't wear the traditional ermine cape as he appeared before crowds during the evening of March 13th.
"That's already a small sign of breaking with tradition," Marsura said.
Pope Francis opened his pontificate with a visit to Rome's main basilica, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, on the morning of March 14th.
Italy's RAI state television said the former archbishop of Buenos Aires entered the basilica through a side entrance just after 8 a.m. (0700 GMT) and left about 30 minutes later.
On March 13th he had told a crowd of some 100,000 people packed in a rain-soaked St. Peter's Square just after his election, that he intended to pray to the Madonna "that she may watch over all of Rome."
He told cardinals he would also call on retired Pope Benedict XVI on Friday and celebrate an inaugural Mass in the Sistine Chapel.
On March 19th an eclectic line-up of guests paid tribute to Pope Francis after his installation mass in St Peter's Basilica.
Earlier, during his homily, Pope Francis urged princes, presidents, sheiks and thousands of ordinary people gathered for the mass to protect the environment, the weakest and the poorest, mapping out a clear focus of his priorities as leader of the world's 1.2 (b) billion Catholics.
Among the guests greeted by the pope inside St. Peter's basilica were German Chancellor Angela Merkel, US Vice President Joe Biden, the Argentine President Cristina Fernandez, Taiwanese President Ying-Jeou Ma, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, and Spanish crown prince Felipe.
Francis stood in a receiving line to greet each of the government delegations in St. Peter's Basilica, chatting warmly with each one, kissing the few youngsters who came along with their parents and occasionally blessing a rosary given to him.
Unlike his predecessors, he did so in just his white cassock, not the red cape.
All told, six sovereign rulers, 31 heads of state, three princes and 11 heads of government were attending the installation Mass, the Vatican said.
Some 132 official delegations attended, including more than a half-dozen heads of state from Latin America, a sign of the significance of the election for the region.
Francis has made clear he wants his pontificate to be focused on the poor, a message that has resonance in a poverty-stricken region that counts 40 percent of the world's Catholics.
The Argentine native is the first pope from Latin America and the first named for the 13th-century friar St. Francis of Assisi, whose life's work was to care for nature, the poor and most disadvantaged.
Echoing the gentleness for which St. Francis is known, the pope said a little bit of tenderness can "open up a horizon of hope."
After the service, the expectations were high among the thousands of faithful who had attentively followed his sermon.
Editha Qwizisiz of Poland believes this pope could change the world: "He is a Pope that will change the history of the church but also of the world. We have really high hopes in him," she said.
Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi - a Vatican insider - agreed and pointed that the Church should seize this moment to awake to a "new evangelisation". "This pope is the right pope at the right time," he concluded.
The Vatican said between 150,000-200,000 people attended the Mass, held under bright blue skies after days of chilly rain and featuring flag-waving fans from around the world.
On March 24th Pope Francis celebrated his first Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter's Square, encouraging people to be humble and young at heart, as tens of thousands joyfully waved olive branches and palm fronds.
The square overflowed with about 250,000 pilgrims, tourists and Romans eager to join the new pope at the start of solemn Holy Week ceremonies, which lead up to Easter, Christianity's most important day.
Francis wore bright red robes over a white cassock as he presided over the Mass at an altar sheltered by a white canopy on the steps of St. Peter's Basilica.
Keeping with his spontaneous style, the first pope from Latin America broke away several times from the text of his prepared homily to encourage the faithful to lead simple lives.
Palm Sunday marks Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and recalling the triumphant welcome, Francis said Jesus awakened hopes in the hearts of humble, simple, poor, and forgotten people.
He then told an off-the-cuff story from his childhood in Argentina.
"My grandmother told us when we were children, no shroud has pockets," the pope said, a phrase similar to "you can't take it with you."
Since his election on March 13th, Francis has put the downtrodden and poor at the centre of his mission as pope, keeping with the priorities of his Jesuit tradition.
His name - the first time a pope has called himself 'Francis' - is inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, who renounced a life of high-living for austere poverty and simplicity to preach Jesus' message to the poor.
In his homily, Francis said Christian joy does not come from possession, but from "having met" Jesus.
"We must live the faith with a young heart, always, even at the age of seventy or eighty!
