Various shots of paper timetables\u003cbr/\u003eA small city in the UK has adapted military software to help ease its traffic problems.\u003cbr/\u003eThe airwaves in Portsmouth''s city centre has been developed into a \"mesh\" network that allows buses to be tracked in real time, with the information sent straight to waiting passengers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe council say its been a runaway success and are now looking to expand the service.\u003cbr/\u003ePortsmouth, on England''s southern coast, is famed for its naval heritage and harbour.\u003cbr/\u003eAt one stage it had the world''s largest naval base.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city was bombed extensively during WW2, and while most of it has been rebuilt, unexploded bombs are still occasionally found.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city has declined in recent years but remains a major dockyard and base - developments like the brand-new Spinaker Tower part of the rejuvenation\u003cbr/\u003eBut over the years a problem has developed, a slow moving one.\u003cbr/\u003eTraffic levels have risen to near-gridlock levels and the Portsmouth City Council is worried.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Uniquely for a city of its size in the UK portsmouth is on an Island and we have something on the order of 220-thousand vehicle movements a day on and off the city. So as a bus comes through the system it connects up and disconnects, just like a mobile phone.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Brian Jackson, NOW Wireless (developers of the mesh)\u003cbr/\u003eThat information is displayed at bus stops - the countdown until the bus arrives.\u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the technology is hidden - special computers have been installed behind the driver to communicate with the mesh.\u003cbr/\u003eDomblides says the overall cost of the system was four and a quarter million pounds.\u003cbr/\u003eCentral government contributed one and a half million pounds - evidence he says of the level of technological innovation the council wanted to achieve.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also wanted to integrate information kiosks to keep people busy while they wait.\u003cbr/\u003eThe kiosks are integrated into the bus stops allow users to check for council jobs send emails, or just simply figure out where you are.\u003cbr/\u003eUsing a touch screen tourists and out-of-towners can see where they are, and where they want to go.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the press of the screen, the map is printed out. \u003cbr/\u003eBack in the control room the mesh also allows the exact movements of the buses to be monitored.\u003cbr/\u003eThat way they can tell where they are and whether the route is cost effective for bus companies.\u003cbr/\u003eEach bus on the screen says how late or early it is - and with bus companies facing penalties for deviating from the timetable, this information is crucial.\u003cbr/\u003eDombildes says its too early to say how much traffic has been reduced.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"But the public acceptance of the on-street equipment that we have put out there - the real time information displays has been brilliant. The response has been good. There has been very very little vandalism of any sort and 20-thousand people a month are using the kiosks to get information about travel and other related city council
