SOUNDBITE (Pashtu) Captain Malalai Kakar, Kandahar's only policewoman and head of the Kandahar central women's jail\u003cbr/\u003e\"During the fighting (US-led invasion in 2001), I was unemployed and stayed at home. During the rule of the Taliban, I was not working and women's rights were crushed. Personally, I didn't want to work with them (the Taliban).\"  \u003cbr/\u003e13. Kakar with women\u003cbr/\u003e14. Street scene\u003cbr/\u003eFour years after the fall of the Taliban, Afghanistan is trying to cast off the fundamentalism that once barred women from public life.\u003cbr/\u003eJust how much the country has changed since the Taliban's reign is evident in their former stronghold of Kandahar.\u003cbr/\u003eIn this ultra-conservative city, Captain Malalai Kakar is not only the chief female police officer, but she also runs the central women's jail.\u003cbr/\u003eMalalai Kakar was named after Malalai, a national heroine who rallied a wavering Afghan army to defeat 19th-century British invaders. \u003cbr/\u003eKakar risks her life every day, coping with threats from warlords, insurgents and drug dealers. \u003cbr/\u003eBut she's proven to be a tough opponent - killing three would-be assassins.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing the wishes of her father who was also a officer she began training to join the force from age 15 after school. \u003cbr/\u003eHer career was cut short during the Taliban era, when the family was forced to flee to Pakistan overnight when she heard reports that Taliban officials were heading to her home to arrest her for the crime of being a former policewoman.   \u003cbr/\u003eKakar says the years living as a refugee were \"difficult\" with the struggle to make ends meet physically and mentally draining her. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen the Taliban was finally ousted in 2001, she immediately returned home and submitted her resumĂŠ to get back to the job she loved.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of Kakar's main tasks as the city's only female officer is bringing to justice perpetrators of domestic abuse. \u003cbr/\u003eShe believes that as many as one in four wives in the city are regularly beaten by their husbands, with arranged marriages partly to blame for unhappy matches turning violent. \u003cbr/\u003eYet the police woman's own arranged marriage is a happy one - she and her husband, who works for the UN, have six children.\u003cbr/\u003eKakar says she never discusses her work with her husband or children and tries not to worry them about the death threats she receives.\u003cbr/\u003eAs Kandahar's only policewoman, she has duties besides arresting female criminals. \u003cbr/\u003eShe runs the women's prison and accompanies her colleagues on raids so she can search female quarters.\u003cbr/\u003eOne policewoman is woefully inadequate for a city the size of Kandahar and Kakar is on call 24 hours a day, often working a 15 hour day.\u003cbr/\u003eResources such as vehicles to manoeuvre the potholed streets, mobile phones, finger-printing technology and even writing paper are scarce.  \u003cbr/\u003eKakar's tale is one of empowerment, but Afghanistan as a whole remains a traditional Muslim society in which certain laws in communities are firmly entrenched.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, women turned out in force to vote in presidential elections in October and President Hamid Karzai has given three women minor posts in his 30-member cabinet and also
