Pull out to wide of Peres and Babacan sitting at news conference\u003cbr/\u003eTurkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan arrived in Jerusalem on Sunday, part of a tour of the Middle East to discuss the way forward for peace in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eOn his arrival he prayed at the Al Aqsa mosque before meeting with Israeli president Shimon Peres. \u003cbr/\u003eEarlier on Sunday, while meeting with his Syrian counterpart, Walid al-Moallem, Babacan said that tensions were escalating in the Middle East and the region was currently passing through a \"very delicate\" and sensitive stage. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also expressed a hope for progress at an upcoming US-sponsored Mideast peace conference \"on all tracks, including Syria.\" \u003cbr/\u003eRelations are tense between Israel and Syria after an Israeli air raid on a Syrian target near Syria's border with Turkey last month.  \u003cbr/\u003eSyrian President Bashar Assad acknowledged in a television interview for the first time last Monday that the Israeli incursion had been an attack. \u003cbr/\u003eSyria has said it will not attend the planned Mideast peace conference if it did not address Israel's occupation of the Golan Heights, which it captured from Syria during the 1967 Mideast war.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring a joint news conference with the Israeli president, Babacan described his meetings in Syria as \"very productive.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"I was happy to see that the government of Syria and the President of Syria playing a very constructive role in the region, and Syria, a country, being a part of (the) solution, not part of the problem,\" Babacan said, speaking alongside the Israeli President.\u003cbr/\u003eTurkish media had reported that Babacan was expected to play a mediatory role between Syria and Israel. His country maintains good relations with Israel.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an interview with the pan-Arab daily Al Hayat newspaper published on Sunday, Babacan was reported to say he hoped to see Syria participate in the conference, scheduled to be held in late November in the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eBabacan confirmed, during the news conference alongside Peres, that he was seeking information
