Vietnam warmed the relationship by lowering its shroud of isolation and allowing Americans to search for the remains of fallen US soldiers.\u003cbr/\u003eThat helped lead then-President Bill Clinton in 2000 to become the first US leader to visit Vietnam since since Richard Nixon in 1969. \u003cbr/\u003eA year later, the two sides signed a landmark trade deal, which has grown far beyond both sides' expectations, netting 6.44 (b) billion US dollars in two-way trade last year.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, high-ranking communist officials travel to Washington and US Navy warships make port calls to the former Saigon, renamed Ho Chi Minh City. Direct flights now connect the two countries, linking the largest Vietnamese population outside the communist country, some one (m) million in the United States, to their motherland.\u003cbr/\u003eEach year, hundreds of thousands of overseas Vietnamese who fled the communist country now return home to celebrate the Lunar New Year. In the early years, many faced hostility but Vietnam now welcomes them and their dollars, about 3.8 (b) billion US dollars in remittances in 2004. Last year, Vietnam even allowed former South Vietnam premier Nguyen Cao Ky to return after 29 years in exile in the United States.  \u003cbr/\u003eUS Ambassador to Vietnam, Michael W. Marine stresses that \"the relationship has been growing steadily, if not dramatically, over the past ten years on a whole wide range of fronts\" though that \"does not mean that there won't be areas of disagreement or areas of concern.\" \u003cbr/\u003eLast year, the US State Department named Vietnam as one of the worst violators of religious freedom, a designation that could lead to economic sanctions.\u003cbr/\u003eVietnam has shown some promise recently by releasing a handful of political and religious dissidents from jail, but it continues to detain and harass those who refuse to worship in Communist-approved churches.\u003cbr/\u003eOld war issues also continue to cloud progress. \u003cbr/\u003eA US court recently dismissed a class-action lawsuit filed by Vietnamese accusing American companies of war crimes for making the defoliant Agent Orange, used to destroy jungle cover for Vietnamese troops. \u003cbr/\u003eWashington insists there is not enough scientific evidence to link Agent Orange to health problems, though others say it caused widespread deformities in babies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dispute scuttled a joint research project on the defoliant earlier this year after the two sides couldn't agree on parameters for the study.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the US has funded other war-related issues, including the search and removal of land mines and unexploded ordinance. The two sides are currently negotiating a bilateral deal that would help Vietnam enter the World Trade Organisation and plans are underway for the first prime ministerial visit to Washington.\u003cbr/\u003eTruong Ngoc Thuy, Director of Culture and Information of Ho Chi Minh City, affirms the new attitude of the Vietnamese government.  She said the government has constructed the country \"in the spirit of \"doi moi\", making full use of the potentials and implementing great national unity policy and showing our wish to be friends with every country in the world.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMore American companies are flooding Vietnam to do business. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter working more than 24 years in Silicon Valley in San Francisco, Thinh Nguyen - an American of Vietnamese origin - decided to establish his own private company in Ho Chi Minh City four years ago. His company, Pyramid Software Development, employs some dozens of foreign and local software engineers and earns revenues mostly from customers in the US.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a symbol of just how far
