Melinda Gates Foundation's annual activities, the co-chairpersons of the world's largest charitable foundation sought to dispel the notions that poor countries are doomed to stay poor, that foreign aid is wasteful and that saving lives will cause overpopulation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Gates' wrote in the 16-page letter, \"All three reflect a dim view of the future, one that says the world isn't improving but staying poor and sick, and getting overcrowded.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you think poor countries stay poor, that's myth one, if you think aid, like what our Foundation does, hasn't had this huge impact or if you think that things like improving health actually create the over-population that then makes everything that counts - feeding kids, educating kids, preserving the environment - makes those far more difficult, then you wouldn't understand why that's the Gates Foundation priority, \" Bill Gates said on Tuesday. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the letter, the couple said that GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita figures, adjusted for inflation to 2005 dollars, show that many countries such as China, India, Brazil and even Botswana that were once considered poor now have growing economies.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd in Africa, a place that Microsoft co-founder Bill says is all too often dismissed as hopeless, life expectancy has risen since the 1960s despite the HIV epidemic. \u003cbr/\u003eAlso, more children are going to school and fewer people are hungry.\u003cbr/\u003eGates also argued against claims that foreign aid is wasteful because it is too expensive, because it is stolen by corrupt officials receiving it or because countries who receive it become dependent on it.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said that in Norway, the world's most generous donor of foreign aid, the amount of its budget that goes to foreign aid is only 3 percent. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the United States it's less than 1 percent, or about 30 (b) billion US dollars per year, of which 11(b) billion US dollars goes to vaccines, bed nets and other health causes.\u003cbr/\u003eBill Gates said on Tuesday that he understands why people are cynical of foreign aid, but he thinks most people miss the successes of aid because the failures often get more news coverage.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has made 28.3 (b) billion US dollars in grant payments since its inception 13 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
