DeLorean sports car drives down road out of frame\u003cbr/\u003eThe DeLorean was a car of dreams. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dream of its designer John DeLorean who imagined a futuristic sports car with doors that opened like wings. \u003cbr/\u003eThat dream turned into a nightmare for DeLorean when the company collapsed after just two years in 1983 and he was accused of drug trafficking. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now the car has inspired a new dream of generation of entrepreneurs who plan to revive the car's fortunes and create new vehicles to supply the ongoing demand for the classic car. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is sleek, speedy and sexy, the DeLorean sports car.\u003cbr/\u003eThirty years ago, John DeLorean had a vision of a car that would revolutionise the car industry.\u003cbr/\u003eSince no one else wanted to build it, DeLorean decided to build it himself and the result was the famous stainless steel, \"gull winged door\" DeLorean.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Lotus engineered, two seater, sports car quickly became the darling of celebrities, other sports car enthusiasts and starred in a 1985 movie with Michael J. Fox, \"Back to the Future.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut the operation based in Belfast Northern Ireland, collapsed after two years. \u003cbr/\u003eDeLorean simply couldn't sell enough of the cars to sustain the business. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Texas a small boy called James Espey, fell in love with the car and swore to himself that one day he would build the cars. \u003cbr/\u003eA quarter century after DeLorean Motor Co. began making its glitzy, $25,000 two-seater cars  Espey and a small group of automotive professionals are planning to bring the vehicle back into limited production at a 40,000-square-foot (3,716 sq. metre) factory in a Houston, Texas, suburb.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn DeLorean gladly gave up his name to the new, upstart, private company before he died.\u003cbr/\u003eDeLorean was the antithesis of the buttoned-down auto executive of his day, sporting designer suits, dating models and moving in celebrity circles. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile at GM in the 1960s, he created what some consider the first \"muscle car,\" putting a V-8 engine into a Pontiac Tempest and calling it the GTO.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company folded in 1983, a year after DeLorean was busted in a drug trafficking sting and accused of conspiring to sell $24 million worth of cocaine to salvage the venture. \u003cbr/\u003eHe used an entrapment defense to win acquittal, but legal entanglements plagued him for years to come.\u003cbr/\u003eHe died in 2005 at the age of 80.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the showroom in Humble, Texas, advertising images from the early 80s reflected the \"DeLorean lifestyle,\" the sleek, stainless steel, highly engineered sports car.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd, from nearby, a smiling John DeLorean looks over the new empire that is the off-spring his car design inspired.\u003cbr/\u003eEspey has a small office just off the showroom floor where he is in contact with DeLorean owners who need parts or servicing and people interested in buying a DeLorean.\u003cbr/\u003eDeLorean's factory in Belfast, Northern Ireland, eventually made fewer than 9,000 cars, distinctive for their gull-wing doors, stainless-steel exterior and rear-engine design.\u003cbr/\u003eAn estimated 6,500 remain on the road.\u003cbr/\u003eEspey says his mechanics are working on 30 to 40 cars for restoration at a time and that they complete one car every six weeks depending on initial condition.\u003cbr/\u003eYou can buy a re-built DeLorean, a car built from an existing DeLorean rebuilt from the frame up for a base price of around $42 thousand (euro 31,400).\u003cbr/\u003eEspey says the Houston operation can rebuild one car every couple of months.\u003cbr/\u003eThis incarnation of the DeLorean Motor Company was formed in 1995 when entrepreneur Stephen Wynne was working on DeLoreans at a local Houston garage.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, he needed a name, and because there was nothing legally preventing him from using the original, he decided to give it a shot. \u003cbr/\u003eHe even called John DeLorean, who wished him luck.\u003cbr/\u003eA dozen years later, the company hopes to use the car's celebrity - along with the world's biggest stash of DeLorean parts and engines - into a niche production business that begins hand-making two DeLoreans a month sometime next year. \u003cbr/\u003eEspey says the Houston office has just started taking orders and all the parts are ready to go.\u003cbr/\u003eThe handmade cars will feature about 80 percent original parts.\u003cbr/\u003eThe other 20 percent will be new, supplier-made parts from companies such Valeo SA and the Bosch Group, said DeLorean vice president James Espey.\u003cbr/\u003eThe one limiting factor is the doors. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company has enough for about 500 cars, though it's important to keep some in stock for repairs and such. \u003cbr/\u003eBeyond that, Espey said, the company is studying its options.\u003cbr/\u003eEnhancements to the new cars will include an improved stainless-steel frame, a stronger but lighter fiberglass underbody and electronics upgraded from the disastrous systems in the early DeLoreans. \u003cbr/\u003eA peppier engine - the original cars' 135 horsepower was a downer for performance enthusiasts - will be available as an option.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter working on these cars practically every day for 25 years, Espey says he's identified most of the issues with the electronics and replaced them.\u003cbr/\u003eThe base price of a new DeLorean is expected to be $57,500 - roughly the same price a 1981 DeLorean would have cost in today's dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company will sell the cars from its shop in Humble and affiliate shops in Bonita Springs, Florida, Crystal Lake, Illinois, Bellevue, Washington, and Orange County, California. \u003cbr/\u003eDMC also has a shop in the Netherlands for European owners.\u003cbr/\u003eTexas company bought up large portion of remaining DeLorean Motor Company parts and plans
