Various of gorillas in the forest.
Only 700 mountain gorillas remain in the wild according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
Continuous threats such as hunting, war, disease, destruction of forest habitat and capture for the illegal pet trade have plagued mountain gorillas since their discovery 100 years ago.
Half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas are found in Ugandan forests.
Now Ugandan wildlife and tourism authorities have embarked on an ambitious awareness campaign to educate local communities on the protection of the endangered species.
It's here, deep in the thick forests of Bwindi National Park in Uganda that between 300 to 350 mountain gorillas make their home.
The park is one of only two places in the world these rare and critically endangered animals exist.
An estimated 350 more gorillas live on the Virunga range of volcanic mountains on the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Uganda.
Uncontrolled hunting, disease, war and loss of habitat have combined has combined to make the ancient existence of these magnificent primates difficult to maintain.
But here in the Bwindi National Park, the gorillas have found a relatively safer haven - away from poachers and trophy collectors - at least for now.
"Poachers used to kill these animals using spears because they could consider them as bad omen, bad luck when you are going for hunting," says Dave Masiko, a national Park warden, "that's why we don't move closer to them today with walking sticks because they may memorise what used to happen the horrible life they had."
Conservation of the mountain gorillas is maintained in Bwindi thanks to the National Park's thriving eco-tourism programme.
The gorillas are conditioned to tolerate the presence of humans which allows Uganda to earn the much needed foreign revenue from tourism in the area.
Poaching has been a significant threat to the survival of mountain gorillas since they were first discovered in the early 1900s.
By 1920 more than 50 mountain gorillas had been killed by scientists and trophy hunters.
Today infant mountain gorillas are still poached to be sold as pets or to zoos.
Adults are hunted for their body parts or sometimes fall victim to hunting snares intended to catch other wildlife.
The Uganda slopes were declared a gorilla game sanctuary in 1931.
Now the United Nations Environment programme along with several other international conservation agencies including the Great Ape Survival Partnership (GRASP) have declared 2009 the Year of the Gorilla.
Supported by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, they aim to raise the profile of gorillas across the globe and focus international attention on implementing conservation programmes and activities that will improve their safety.
"In Uganda the mountain gorillas are a flagship species for tourism, our tourism industry has been boosted," says Moses Mapesa, the Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Thousands of tourists head to the Ugandan slopes every year to get a close up view of the gorillas in their natural habitat.
But it's not just gorilla spotting trips in the forest that is earning money for the country.
These children from a small orphanage on the outskirts of the Bwindi National Park are performing a gorilla dance for tourists.
The donations they receive are put towards providing necessities for the school.
"We just entertain visitors they donate and some others do give sponsorship to them, through the donations we give them school fees and some other necessities," says Sulaina Tumwebaze, a trainer at the Bwindi Development Centre.
"It's been great, it's amazing the amount of stuff they (orphans) can remember - more than me," says John Kennedy, a tourist visiting the Bwindi National Park and orphanage.
2009 may be the year of the gorilla, but long-term preservation of mountain gorillas is vital if the species is to survive.
The Uganda government are currently working to increase the quality of life of communities living around Bwindi and enhance national awareness of the Impenetrable National Park as a World Heritage Site.
Keyword
