Medium of crosses in front of police barriers\u003cbr/\u003eDozens of former Argentinian soldiers who fought in the Falklands War in 1982 on Saturday accused a general in charge of troops of negligence and called on the government to cancel his pension.\u003cbr/\u003eA group of ex-combatants gathered to protest outside the home of former General Mario Benjamin Menendez, a day ahead of the 24th anniversary marking the beginning of the conflict, blaming the former general for casualties during the war.\u003cbr/\u003eMenendez was commander of the occupying Argentinian troops and military governor of the Falkland Islands.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a communique read out during the protest, Menendez was accused of being \"desk general\" - absent whilst his troops were out at war.\u003cbr/\u003eOne protester said unlike Menendez, they deserved their pensions because they actually went into combat.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We don't want to be compared to him, because the pensions we receive have been given to us by the national government for having gone into combat. conflict. \u003cbr/\u003eArgentine troops invaded the islands known to Argentines as Las Malvinas and to the British as the Falkland Islands on April 2, 1982, to reclaim them. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Argentine government, headed by General General Leopoldo Galtieri, hoped to use the nationalist fervour a short successful war would arouse to divert attention from the country's shattered economy. \u003cbr/\u003eThe war sparked a wave of patriotic sentiment swept through the United Kingdom, bolstering the government of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher also in crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eIn all, more than 700 Argentines and 255 British soldiers perished before Britain reclaimed the islands, populated by 2,220 people of mostly British ancestry. \u003cbr/\u003eArgentina still maintains its
