The State Department says that should not raise eyebrows. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The U-S has decided to grant a visa to Vice President Li for his transit of the U-S.  He'll be on route to and from Haiti where he will attend the presidential inauguration and El Salvador.  And these transits will take place between Feb 3-12. There will be no public activities by Vice President Li during the transit.  They are certainly consistent with our long standing policy and with our unofficial relationship with Taiwan.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nicholas Burns, U.S. State Department Spokesperson\u003cbr/\u003eAnother Asian issue stems from anger on the Japanese island of Okinawa over the large U-S military presence.\u003cbr/\u003eTension on Okinawa reached a new high after three American servicemen were accused of raping a 12-year-old girl. \u003cbr/\u003eThere have been various proposals concerning the relocation and size of the U-S bases on Okinawa.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm not sure there's been any official communication with the U-S about this particular proposal by the local government on Okinawa.  I can just say that I think it is understood and accepted by both Japan and the Unite States that both Japan and the U-S should maintain a very large military presence in Japan, that that is part of our defense alliance.  It's important for Japan's security and it's by the wish of the Japanese government and the Japanese people that we remain in Japan.
