Close of feet on board, tilt up to mid shot of woman balancing on board\u003cbr/\u003eChronic back pain is costing employers a massive ÄÅ¼Ë3.5million ($5.5 million USD) in the UK alone.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's according to the UK's Health and Safety Executive.\u003cbr/\u003eNow keeping us on our feet has become a multi-million dollar business, and the market is constantly being updated with a multitude of gadgets.\u003cbr/\u003eWe all like to get swept off our feet and if you're one of the seventy per cent of Britons who've suffered more than the odd twinge of back pain this might be just what you need.\u003cbr/\u003eThese inversion tables aim to stop back pain by stopping compression and stretching the spine.\u003cbr/\u003eYou don't have to go all the way over, the manufacturers say just inverting the body about twenty to thirty degrees can make all the difference.\u003cbr/\u003eIt aims to correct poor posture too by elongating the muscles.\u003cbr/\u003eChronic back pain can be caused by a multitude of different problems.\u003cbr/\u003eThe majority are down to the way we live. \u003cbr/\u003eToo many of us spend too many hours hunched up over desks, sitting for too long when we should spend more time walking and standing.\u003cbr/\u003eTooba Khawaja knows just how vital back health can be.\u003cbr/\u003eFor years Khawaja has suffered from chronic fatigue which has resulted in severe muscular pain and she had to give up a career as a solicitor.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says she tries to minimise the effects by ensuring the foods she eats provide her with the nutrition she needs.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition Khawaja takes food supplements and tries to control the pain with other therapies involving massage and acupuncture.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"I looked at a couple of the basic massages which should help with improving the circulation that's one thing I've heard contributes to generalised joint pain\".\u003cbr/\u003eNow Khawaja is prepared to take a step further and believes an inversion table could be a worthwhile investment.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're not cheap.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mechanical one will set you back over $700 (USD), the fully automated version cost almost three times that.\u003cbr/\u003eKhawaja, who suffers from headaches and memory loss says it would be worth it because she \"can see it working on a number of levels as well.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThis device is called the Alpha Stim and works by sending extremely small pulsating currents of electricity to the area of pain.\u003cbr/\u003eThese microcurrent machines claim to work at a cellular level.\u003cbr/\u003eThe idea is that the currents are so low they are more biologically compatible than other forms of stimulation, allowing the current to penetrate the cell\u003cbr/\u003eIt's manufacturers say more than a dozen randomised control trials in north America and other countries have shown that it is an effective way to tackle back pain.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company says it's been used by America's Dallas Cowboys and by the US military for veterans with post traumatic stress disorder.\u003cbr/\u003eElectrotherapy in the form of TeNS machines (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) have been in use for decades.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the makers of the Alpha Stim say the difference is that the higher currents block the receptors that register pain whereas the microcurrent rejuvenates cellular activity.\u003cbr/\u003eEar clips mean the current  can also be used to tackle cranial aches and pains.\u003cbr/\u003eOccupational therapist Linda Horncastle says she was converted to the therapy after suffering fibromyalgia for many years.\u003cbr/\u003eHorncastle says \"it's a condition of chronic pain and fatigue and basically it's like living with flu every single day and it's an absolutely shattering and devastating condition and I haven't been able to work for twenty years until just recently.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Horncastle regular use of microcurrent therapy means she's able to be a full time mother and work normally.\u003cbr/\u003ePhysiotherapist Leslie Huyton uses various forms of electro-currents including the Alpha Stim.\u003cbr/\u003eHe admits that many patients using these therapies to combat stressful and chronic pains may be benefiting from the placebo effect.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he argues \"a third of every clinical trial has a placebo effect. The most important thing is can you improve on placebo effect and  this has been shown to improve upon that.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNot everything here is just for pain relief at home.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen you walk on this mat it sends signals to a computer showing you how your posture could be causing serious problems for your back.\u003cbr/\u003eA computer monitor shows how you spread, or focus tension in certain areas when you walk \u003cbr/\u003eIt's used by the private Spire group of hospitals as a way to teach patients correct posture.\u003cbr/\u003eChartered physiotherapist Alison Hodges says it's \"a gait analysis mat, you walk across it and we're looking to see what kind of forces are going through the foot and how that can be affecting pain that you have higher up in the spine, or in your foot itself. \u003cbr/\u003eAlongside the mat Hodges' colleague is demonstrating a contraption which looks like it might be a medieval back stretching torture.\u003cbr/\u003eIn fact it's a form of horizontal Pilates for back pain sufferers.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's called the Pilates Reformer.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Hodges\"When you're in pain, you don't move normally, the brain forgets to move normally and so what we do is put you in a pain free position, you exercise that, the brain starts picking that up again.\" \u003cbr/\u003eShe says after using the machine \"you stand people up and they're moving better and their pain should have dropped down.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHester Campbell is working out using boots which effectively work like mini trampolines.\u003cbr/\u003eShe's a dancer and fitness instructor.\u003cbr/\u003eThe boots allow her to move without her body having to absorb the shock of her feet hitting the ground.\u003cbr/\u003eBut while these boots are good at absorbing impact they're not the easiest things to stand in let alone run in.\u003cbr/\u003eCampbell admits these jumping boots takes some getting used to.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says it's like Pilates exercises where you have to find your true centre of gravity for a straight posture.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Campbell \"the body has a certain alignment that it wants to be in, but a lot of us don't stand with our bodies in that way, we often stand to the side, slightly forwards, slightly backwards.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"putting these boots on necessitates that you stand with your correct alignment. So just standing still in the boots is a very difficult exercise.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIf all that seems too much you can always find a machine to do the walking for you.\u003cbr/\u003eThis machine allows you to go horse riding while you watch the television.\u003cbr/\u003eYou've heard of dry ski slopes, well if you're fed up of sitting down, but don't fancy getting your feet wet, you can now try your
