Wide shot of Gorgona Island as the ferry drives away. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the remote Italian prison island of Gorgona inmates are making white wine that sells for $66 a bottle in Italy.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe prisoners are learning about the business with the help of one of Tuscany's most prominent producers in the hope they'll swap a life of wine after a life of crime.\u003cbr/\u003eA message in a bottle is causing waves in Italy's penitentury system. \u003cbr/\u003eThis message is a wine label. And the wine has been produced by the inmates of Gorgona prison.\u003cbr/\u003eSurrounded by blue seas and lush hillsides, this island jail is now offering a future for prisoners beyond the penal system. \u003cbr/\u003eGorgona's once abandoned vineyards have now become a training ground for convicts - serving time for armed robbery, attempted murder or homicide - to prepare them for a new life on the outside.  \u003cbr/\u003eBrian is one such winemaker-in-training. The 30-year-old from the northern wine region of Treviso says Gorgona has given him direction.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Where I come from, it's all vineyards and stuff, so it's good to learn it and know more about it. It's useful for now and for the future,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eSixteen months ago, good behaviour enabled Brian to be transferred from the over-crowded prison in Treviso and onto Gorgona Island. \u003cbr/\u003eHere, a total of 50 prisoners come to finish the remaining ten years of their sentence. Unlike other prisons, Gorgona allows them to roam free, and spend up to 12 hours a day outside. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In a closed prison you are, let's say, more aggressive, you're always on edge,\" says Brian.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Here instead, you can relax because you have your own time and the space that allows you to feel calm,\" .  \u003cbr/\u003eBrian recently met the vineyard's private sponsor, the Marquise Lamberto Frescobaldi.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe 30th generation wine maker is committed to getting the wine out of Gorgona and into the market.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe persuaded top-notch associates to produce 2700 bottles of 2012 \"Gorgona\" wine, negotiating a designer label and a $40,000 tractor for free. \u003cbr/\u003eBecause of this, the prison vineyard program now has a legitimate wine label. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This project with the Marchese of Frescobaldi is so important to us, because the inmates can learn a trade, under the supervision of the company's experts, who can somehow train them to do this important job,\" says prison director Maria Grazia Giampiccolo. \u003cbr/\u003eGiampiccolo reached out to Frescobaldi last year after stiff government cuts limited the amount of time an inmate could work, to four from six hours a day.  \u003cbr/\u003eGiampiccolo sent out a stream of emails claiming that cutting her budget by one third would put Gorgona's programs at risk. \u003cbr/\u003eOnly Frescobaldi replied and stepped in with $20,000 a year, covering the missing two hours for four workers. \u003cbr/\u003eBesides the workers' salary, Frescobaldi also covered all the cellar equipment and production costs.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith his own $100 million wine business, and 3,000 acres of vineyards across Tuscany, Frescobaldi isn't in it for the money.  He says, his incentive is helping inmates rebuild their lives.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"We have committed to hiring these people when they get out of here. Here in Gorgona, inmates are at the end of their jail time, so helping these people have a place to work the moment they get out, so they don't fall back into wrongdoing,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eGorgona, which sits 20 miles off the Tuscan coast, is the last prison island in Italy.  \u003cbr/\u003eIts programs also include cheese making, construction work and agriculture, representing a unique example of re-education through work.   \u003cbr/\u003eBut in a country where the justice system struggles with multiple arrests and quick releases, overcrowding keeps larger prisons from producing similar progams. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Italian Ministry of Justice, 80 per cent of all inmates that do not work during their time in prison relapse into crime. \u003cbr/\u003eIn prisons like Gorgona, the relapse rate has plummeted to 20 per cent. \u003cbr/\u003eGorgona's history of isolation and self-sustenance dates back millennia. In Ancient Roman times, it was a place for hermits.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the Middle Ages it became a monastery, hosting monks who adored Saint Gorgonio. \u003cbr/\u003eUnder the Medici Family, during the Renaissance, it became a fortified military post, with agricultural fields in the hands of local aristocracy. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1869, Gorgona became a prison.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, the island
