Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a packed presentation, representatives of manufacturer Electrolux showed the new machine to the Asian public for the first time. \u003cbr/\u003eCompany officials hope that Hong Kong's love of electronics and the high local standard of living will make it a natural market for the robot vacuum.\u003cbr/\u003eThe people of Hong Kong got a glimpse of the future on Monday when the world's first robot vacuum cleaner was unveiled at a packed demonstration for the press.\u003cbr/\u003eLike a scene from a cartoon, the new machine whirs around the living room carpet unaided, taking the hard work out of household chores.\u003cbr/\u003eThe disc-shaped machine has a built-in navigational radar that helps it find open spaces to clean.  \u003cbr/\u003eManufacturer Electrolux claims that the robot can pick up 97 per cent of household dust and dirt, while the average consumer only manages to pick up 75 per cent with a standard vacuum cleaner.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new vacuum cleaner needs around one hour to clean two average-sized bedrooms.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter that, its on-board power pack needs recharging.\u003cbr/\u003eElectrolux has not yet decided when the machine will be put on sale as at present prices would be too high for most people.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the company is optimistic about sales as consumer testing has gone well.\u003cbr/\u003eThe robot cleaner is a far cry from the early, labour-intensive machines sold by Electrolux over the past 90 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company says consumers like the fact that it cuts down their work load so dramatically and has a miniature brain which stops it damaging furniture - and pets.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the reporters at Monday's demonstration were impressed with the future of housekeeping.\u003cbr/\u003eBut one reporter was not swept off her feet.\u003cbr/\u003eHer pen was sucked up by the robot, despite promises that the machine would brush it
