Various of traffic
Transport workers causing havoc on French rails will extend their strike for a seventh day on Tuesday and dovetail the action with a mass walkout by civil servants, increasing pressure on President Nicolas Sarkozy to backtrack on his bid to reform France.
But the government stood its ground, with Prime Minister Francois Fillon saying the reforms must go through - even though the strikes are costing the country at least 300 (m) million euros (439.6 (m) million US dollars) a day.
Strikes led by train drivers angry over Sarkozy's plans to extend their retirement age have hampered rail traffic and public transport and snarled roads for nearly a week.
Schools, postal and tax services will fall victim to a strike on Tuesday by civil servants seeking higher salaries and job security.
But not everybody seems to agree with the strikers to be extended to other categories of civil servants.
Service users expressed their anger at the stoppage which is hampering their daily activities.
"It's not because the country is in trouble at the moment that everyone should do the same. We pay a bit of the consequences and we live with it," said another customer.
According to Elisabeth David, Secretary-General of UNSA Civil Servants, a union, one of the main problems is that since 2000 civil servants have lost significant purchasing power because salaries have not increased for them.
"Since 2000 there hasn't been any real negotiation on the salaries of civil servants, that means a significant loss of purchasing power," David said.
"Now we would like a real negotiation on salaries to open and for us to get an increase in salaries," she added.
Disruptions could also be expected in air traffic, as air traffic controllers fall into the civil servants' category.
Air France employees have said they will take part in the job action, and the company said flights, mainly domestic, would be modified from Marseilles and Paris' Orly airport.
Simmering student protests that have disrupted classes at dozens of universities added yet another dimension to the angry fallout from Sarkozy's efforts to jolt France into a new, more competitive era.
There were no immediate signs that the various movements planned to fuse their efforts - simultaneous but separate - into a single blanket protest, despite words of solidarity among them.
Remi Barroux, a journalist for Le Monde newspaper said the civil servants' action is not likely to carry on after 20th November.
However he said further meetings will probably take place in the coming months because the core issue that Nicolas Sarkozy's government has to find solutions for is the general loss of purchasing power among the population.
"One of the problems of the government and of Sarkozy is this question of the purchasing power, for which he hasn't found solutions and on which the majority of the population - all the surveys are showing it - believe strike.
Sarkozy was elected in May on promises to reform France - from its courts to its creaking university system, its army of civil servants to rail workers whose special retirement privileges he vowed to erase.
Taking on the transport workers has proved to be an especially thorny - and costly - task as unions voted on Monday to extend their open-ended strike for a seventh day.
"It's a real worry for the French economy," Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said.
The strikes are costing the French economy between 300 million and 350 million euros (439.6 (m) million US dollars and 512.7 (m) million US dollars a day, she said.
Talks between unions and the management of the rail network and Paris transit authority were set for Wednesday.
Authorities have backed off slightly from the original government position of no talks during strikes.
PM Francois Fillon said on Monday that rail traffic must progressively restart before the talks can begin and added that the government has a mandate to push the reform forward.
He also said that lots of subjects are nevertheless open to discussion and he dismissed as a minority the protesters hobbling the Paris subway and nationwide rail system.
Meanwhile, civil servants seeking pay hikes prepared for what was expected to be a massive walkout on Tuesday.
No national newspapers were expected to appear on Tuesday, as printers and delivery personnel also planned to join the strike.
Though not state workers, they are using the opportunity to protest job cuts, and fear the retirement reform is a first step toward dismantling the protective French social system.
Students were also joining Tuesday's protest.
Knots of students have been blocking universities around France for two weeks to protest a law passed this summer
