Wide of Baalbeck ruins at sunset\u003cbr/\u003eThe Baalbeck International Festival is renewing Lebanon's links with its past  - before bloody civil war ripped the country apart - when it was the East-West crossroads of culture, free-expression and style.\u003cbr/\u003eBaalbeck, famous for its captivating Roman ruins which provide perfect accoustics for the performers, will play host to a combination of traditional Arab arts and headline pop acts including Sting, Flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia and classical performances form Europe's leading ensembles.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Baalbeck International Festival held its first session in 1956.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was inaugurated by Jean Cocteau who came in person to present \"La Machin Infernale\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe characteristic Lebanese spirit of initiative, coupled with traditional oriental hospitality gradually succeeded in convincing major artists to come in increasing numbers to Baalbeck, such as Rostropovich, the Paris and Milan Operas, the Royal Ballet, the Bolsho誰 Ballet, all appeared along with great orchestras of the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Festival evolved in two main directions. It kept with Lebanon's heritage as a crossroads of civilizations and it celebrated creativity by producing original works commissioned from contemporary writers and composers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Baalbeck International Festival was shut down by the civil war (1975-1996) in Lebanon but resumed its activities in 1997.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 2001 festival starts in July 5, with \"Abu Tayeb Al Mutanabi\", a musical production by Mansour Rahbani inspired by the life of the famous Arab poet Abu Tayeb Al Mutannabi .
