Various of mosque and ground staff
Built without using one single nail, Zharkent's Yuldashev Mosque is a spectacular example of Kazakhstan's multicultural heritage.
But the exquisitely designed architectural treasure, a combination of Central Asian, Russian and especially Chinese influences, is now a virtually deserted museum.
Zharkent is situated in Almaty Region in the far southeast corner of Kazakhstan, at the foot of the Zailysky Alatau mountain range.
The quiet town is the last major settlement in Kazakhstan before the border with China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, 40km to the east.
Its mixed population includes ethnic Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and Russians.
In 1887, local Muslims decided to commission the building of a new mosque.
Led by a Uyghur merchant Alibai Yuldashev, they hired the talents of a Chinese architect Hon Pic, from Beijing.
The mosque was built between 1893 and 1895, the result of a unique religious monument.
Not a single nail was used in its original construction.
But history has since taken its toll on the complex.
An earthquake damaged the buildings, and during the Soviet era, when religious activity was forced underground, the complex was variously used as a stable and even social housing.
In the late 1960s, the former Communist administration decided to turn it into a museum but even today, few tourists make it as far as Zharkent.
"Really it bothers me that this monument is not a UNESCO site," says Airina Kazakh, a tourist. "And UNESCO is not preserving this place as a historical monument. And I'd like to see our own tourism board do something to promote this site, so that not only we can enjoy it but the rest of the world as well."
The mosque also houses the madrassa.
The two share a 'floating' traditional Chinese roof, ringed by wooden columns.
Its outer beams are decorated with colourful floral designs.
Inside a latticed balcony looks down onto a hall large enough for over one thousand worshippers.
The minbar, where the Imam would traditionally give his Friday sermons, and various lanterns, are Chinese in design.
Across the courtyard is the portal, through which the complex is entered.
The arches and cupolas are classic Central Asian, but the windows are Russian in style.
This fusion of Chinese, Central Asian, Russian and Islamic, is considered highly unusual.
The mosque has undergone various stages of restoration.
For an old wooden building, the work never ends, says museum director Sharipkhan Turganov
But he claims the wildlife, which includes a colony of bats, and flocks of birds, help to preserve it.
"I particularly like the bats because they protect the madrassa from woodworm," says Turganov. "They can see at night. Of course a person can't pick up every single worm but the bats can, which stops them from damaging the wood.".
Myths abound about Hon Pic, the master architect.
It is said another of his buildings in China matched the Zharkent mosque in beauty.
According to local legend, Hon Pic lived in fear of his life, because his original patrons had vowed to stop him creating another masterpiece.
The mosque is no longer permitted as a place of worship.
Instead, the faithful pray at Zharkent's Central Mosque nearby.
But Imam Medetbek Kunduzbek says he would happily preach at Yuldashev Mosque if the building was safe.
"In the future, God willing, if we find that it's ok to have prayers there," says Medetbek Kunduzbek, Head Imam of Panfilov Region. "And if everyone in the city gets together to repair it, of course it can be a place where we can worship."
The mosque's future is uncertain.
Whether it will remain a museum or become a living place of worship again rests with the will of the local people, and continued funding for renovation by
