Grey squirrel in tree
Dorest - 1 November, 2007
24. Various of healthy red squirrels
The red squirrel is one of Britain's best loved wild creatures. But the species is under threat from the deadly effects of the squirrel pox virus.
Last month researchers with the Zoological Society of London and elsewhere discovered that some red squirrels have now developed a natural immunity to the disease.
However, it may be too late for one red squirrel reserve in the north west of England, whose population has been devastated by the disease over the past year.
Britain's favourite rodent the red squirrel was immortalised by British children's author Beatrix Potter in the character of Squirrel Nutkin.
But in recent years the red squirrel population has ben under a lot of pressure and is becoming increasingly rare.
They are under threat from their more successful American counterparts the grey squirrel, which was brought to Britain from North America by Victorian landowners more than a century ago.
The red squirrels are badly affected by a disease borne by the grey squirrel, the squirrel pox virus.
These red squirrels (filmed in Dorest, England in 2007) are healthy and unaffected by the virus, but red squirrel numbers across the country have plummeted recently prompting scientists to fear they could be wiped out in England.
In October 2008 researchers with the Zoological Society of London and elsewhere discovered that some red squirrels have developed a natural immunity to the disease.
But at the popular nature reserve at Formby near Liverpool, visitors say they are disappointed that so few red squirrels can be seen this autumn (2008).
The reserve, run by Britain's National Trust, has suffered badly this year from the squirrel pox virus.
Property Manager for National Trust at Formby Andrew Brockbank, explains the symptoms of the disease.
The disease itself does not kill the squirrels, but it affects their overall health and lesions around the eyes and mouth make it difficult for them to feed and so they starve to death. A red squirrel can die within 15 days of becoming infected.
In these pine forests the animals used to dominate the wildlife habitat. But from a population of over 200 red squirrels at the beginning of the year the count is down to nearly 40, Brockbank says.
Scientists at Newcastle University have been studying squirrel populations.
Dr Colin McInnes, of the Moredun Research Institute in Scotland explains that in their most recent survey they carried out blood tests on grey squirrels which confirmed that healthy grey squirrels were carrying the squirrel pox virus, but remained unaffected.
However all the red squirrels with the virus were dead or dying.
Dr Peter Lurz, an ecologist at the School of Biology at Newcastle University is also studying squirrel populations.
He says that in some parts of England the decline of red squirrel population has sped up.
Currently Formby is by far the worse affected area in the country.
Dr Colin McInnes is also trying to develop a vaccine against the squirrel pox virus that can be used to protect the red squirrel.
Visitors to Formby are asked to be vigilant and report any sightings of sick red squirrels.
They are also asked to report any sightings of the grey squirrel so they can be humanely removed to minimise the spread of the squirrel pox virus.
The Lancashire Wildlife Trust conducts surveys, carried out by volunteers, in the Formby area twice a year, once in the spring and once in October.
The results for 2007/2008, the spring survey, have been released and confirms there has been a dramatic 60 per cent reduction in the red squirrel population in the Formby area.
The results for October 2008 have not been collated yet and some results are still due to come in.
Since 2002 when the monitoring first started there has been on average a 10 per cent decline in the population of red squirrels in Formby.
This may be due to winter mortality or lack of breeding.
But the huge decrease in Spring 2008 of 60 per cent has prompted fears that the population may not survive.
Keyword
