Pan of trees in flood waters\u003cbr/\u003eThe US Midwestern city of Fargo and its surroundings was bracing for historic flooding from the swollen Red River while more National Guard troops were called in on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe river, along the North Dakota-Minnesota border, is more than 22 feet above flood stage and is expected to crest well above the previous record of 40.1 feet set in 1897.\u003cbr/\u003eCitizens of Fargo have spent days preparing for the potentially devastating flood. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The water is at about 41 feet, and it is usually about 8 to 12 feet, flood stage is 18. So we are a solid 22 feet I think above flood stage right now,\" said John Erickson, a resident of Fargo who lives next to the river.\u003cbr/\u003eVolunteers have piled sandbags on top of 12 miles (19.3 kilometres) of snow-covered dikes, with the frigid weather freezing the bags solid as they worked.\u003cbr/\u003eErickson's neighbor Jerry Baldwin said he is prepared for the worst and doesn't plan to leave his home.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We intend to make our stand here. We don't intend to leave. We have auxiliary power, that is a generator and numerous pumps, we have a sewer gate, good drain tile and we'll fight this to the end,\" said Baldwin\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials in Fargo are adding National Guard troops and intensifying their response to the rising flood on the Red River.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials say they are increasing the level of guard troops from 1,700 troops to 1,850 and asking residents to keep an eye on dikes for possible breaches.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are also bringing in 300 large bags that hold a ton of sand and could be dropped into breaks in the levees.\u003cbr/\u003eNo major levee breaches or other issues were reported during the night.\u003cbr/\u003eThe National Weather Service predicted the crest at near 42 feet sometime on Sunday, but said it was possible the river could rise to 43 feet. \u003cbr/\u003eThat's as high as the levees go and is nearly 3 feet higher than the record of 40.1 feet set in 1897.\u003cbr/\u003eAround Fargo, crews built a contingency dike system as a second line of defence should the river breach riverside neighbourhoods. That placed some homes between two sets of dikes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe river has been swollen by heavier-than-average winter snow, combined with an early freeze last fall that locked a lot of moisture into the soil. The threat has been made worse by spring rain.\u003cbr/\u003eBone-chilling cold slowed the rise of the already record-high Red River early Saturday as temperatures were in the single digits Fahrenheit (-17 to -13 Celsius) during the night, preventing snow from melting and feeding the rising river. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Red rose less than a foot (30 centimetres) on Friday, compared to 2.5 feet (0.75 metres) on Thursday, and forecasters said late on Friday that the river would crest Sunday afternoon instead of Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eEven after the river crests, the water may not begin receding before Wednesday, keeping up the pressure threatening levees put together mostly by volunteers. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities in Fargo and across the river in Moorhead, Minnesota - a city of about 30,000 people - expanded evacuations on Friday across several blocks. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout a third of the households in Moorhead had been urged to leave. \u003cbr/\u003eUS President Barack Obama, in his weekly radio and Internet address on Saturday, said he was keeping close watch on the Midwest floods and putting the government's full weight behind efforts to prevent
