Woman serving coffee \u003cbr/\u003eA senior US official on Tuesday welcomed the news that Cuban President Fidel Castro had decided to step down, but indicated that the longstanding US trade embargo against the Communist-ruled island would remain.\u003cbr/\u003eUS Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said that as far as the embargo was concerned, he could not imagine it being lifted \"any time soon\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe embargo has been the centrepiece of American policy towards Cuba since shortly after Castro overthrew US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959.\u003cbr/\u003eCastro has called the trade embargo \"criminal\" and says its economic impact on the island has run well into the tens of billions of dollars (US).\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, in Miami's Little Havana neighbourhood, Cuban exiles welcomed Tuesday's news that Castro had officially resigned power, but most in the heart of the Cuban exile community weren't optimistic the move would bring major changes or democracy to the communist nation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is no change,\" said Miguel Saabeger, the president of the Cuban exile group Vigilia Mambisa told AP Television.\u003cbr/\u003e\"That is the same show the government of Cuba prepared to confuse, you know, the Cubans in exile. They confuse the people in Cuba and they confuse the press internationally,\" he continued.\u003cbr/\u003eAs news of the resignation spread, the streets came alive with chatter as small groups gathered on the streets or in local eateries.\u003cbr/\u003eRepeated rumours of Castro's death over the years helped prepare residents and officials for a day that all knew would eventually come.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter hearing of Tuesday's developments, 80-year-old Orlando Gonzalez began selling Cuban flags on the streets of Little Havana.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Cuban, who has lived in Miami for 44 years, told AP Television he would go back to the island if he could, but just for a visit.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, he was hopeful that Castro's resignation was the beginning of a new era in Cuba.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There will be changes and maybe the whole thing is going to disappear ... the Castro regime is going to disappear,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eMost exiles view Castro as a ruthless dictator who forced them, their parents or grandparents from their home after he seized power in a revolution in 1959. \u003cbr/\u003eFrank Pina's parents fled the Castro regime and the 32-year-old was overjoyed to hear the news of Castro's official retirement. \u003cbr/\u003e\"He (Castro) has led with such an iron fist, he has been just such an oppressive guy that I think people have been afraid and now there is an opportunity, so ... is it going to be tomorrow? added.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout one and a half (M) million Cubans and Cuban-Americans live in the US, two-thirds of them in Florida, and the majority in Miami-Dade County, according to the US Census Bureau.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first wave of Cubans who fled the island immediately after Castro took power, often sending their children ahead of them on so-called \"Peter Pan\" flights, generally support the most hardline US policies toward the island. \u003cbr/\u003eWith waning family ties to the island, they are among the most vocal backers of the US embargo.\u003cbr/\u003eThe views of the successive waves of Cuban immigrants are more complicated.\u003cbr/\u003eThose who came over since 1980 are more likely to have grown up under the Castro government and still have family on the island. \u003cbr/\u003eThey chafe under the Bush administration's 2004 restrictions, which limit the money that can be sent home as well restrict island visits to once every three years for immediate
