Sanaa to at least 120 people and causing thousands to flee their homes.\u003cbr/\u003eYemen's state television headquarters was attacked by a Shiite rebel group called the Hawthis, who attempted to storm the building on September 19th after hitting it with mortar fire overnight. \u003cbr/\u003eOn September 19th, Yemen television broadcast pictures of the headquarters, which appeared to show government troops in position outside.\u003cbr/\u003eYemeni Defence Minister Mohammed Nasser Ahmad was shown addressing government soldiers, standing to attention in front of a row of tanks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi appears largely caught in the middle between the Hawthis and their Sunni opponents, a group of militias and army units allied with the Islah party, which is the Muslim Brotherhood's branch in Yemen.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have also fought tribal fighters sympathetic with the Brotherhood or al-Qaida.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hawthis have become one of the country's most powerful players after they surged from their stronghold in the north, taking a string of cities and fighting their way to the capital, Sanaa. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir critics accuse them of being allied with Shiite-led powerhouse Iran and of seeking to grab power in Yemen or carve out a Shiite enclave in the north, claims the movement denies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations has been trying to mediate a political deal between President Hadi and the Hawthis, which would include economic reforms and a new government. \u003cbr/\u003eMeeting with foreign diplomats on Friday, Hadi described the Hawthis' escalation in the capital as a \"coup attempt aimed at toppling the state.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThere has been talk for days of an imminent deal, even as both sides have built up forces in the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eA third day of fighting between Shiite rebels and Sunni militiamen killed at least four civilians in Yemen's capital on September 20th, security and health officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eMortar shells slammed into homes and a local hospital in Sanaa as Shiite rebels, known as Hawthis, battled militias and army units allied with the Muslim Brotherhood's Islah party.\u003cbr/\u003eWitnesses said many families fled their homes while others were trapped by the fighting.\u003cbr/\u003eBattles took place on the road to the international airport and near a major military base, the state television building and on two university campuses, north and west of the city.\u003cbr/\u003eClashes also erupted to the south when the army tried to prevent Hawthis from entering the Yemeni capital. \u003cbr/\u003eThree rebels were killed and two troops were wounded, military officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eAt least 123 fighters have been killed since the violence began on September 18th.\u003cbr/\u003eShiite rebels, known as Hawthis, sized numerous strategically important installations in Yemen's capital Sanaa on September 21st, including the Defence Ministry, the Central Bank, a key military base and the Iman University, according to military and security officials. \u003cbr/\u003eThis came as Yemeni state media announced the resignation of the country's prime minister Mohammed Salem Bassindwa, but the president's office denied it had received any such request. \u003cbr/\u003eThe conflicting information deepened the sense of uncertainty in the country following days of violence which has left more than 140 people dead and sent thousands fleeing their homes.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral armed Hawthis fighters were seen on September 21st at the entrance of the Army General Command. \u003cbr/\u003ePlumes of smoke were seen rising above the First Armoured Division base, following shelling. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Defence Ministry and the General Staff earlier in the day called on military units in Sanaa and nearby areas to remain at their posts, be on high alert and safeguard their weapons and equipment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hawthis have, in recent months, routed Islamist militants in a series of battles in areas north of Sanaa, and in recent days consolidated and expanded their grip on areas just to the north of the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir opponents have traditionally been Sunni Islamist militias allied with the government or the fundamentalist Islah party. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Hawthis have been pressing for a change of government and what they see as a fair share of power.\u003cbr/\u003eYemeni government officials and Shiite rebels signed a peace agreement on September 21st following days of violence that has left more than 140 people dead and sent thousands fleeing their homes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe agreement calls for an immediate ceasefire and the formation of a technocratic government within a month after consultations with all political parties.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar, witnessed the agreement being signed.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We've come to this hall to sign (this agreement) in order to stop the Yemeni bloodshed which is taking place in every street,\" President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi said.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier on September 21st, the rebels, called Hawthis, seized numerous strategically important installations in Sanaa, including the Defence Ministry, the Central Bank, a key military base and Iman University, according
