Pan from choir master to choir boys singing \u003cbr/\u003eCanterbury Cathedral in the county of Kent in southern England has been a centre of Christian worship for more than 900 years. \u003cbr/\u003eNow the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) World Heritage site is under serious threat due to structural deterioration and a campaign has been launched to save it. \u003cbr/\u003eCanterbury Cathedral has stood as the main centre of worship for English speaking Christians for more than 900 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThis grand building has survived damage from a series of turbulent events in English history including World War II bombings. \u003cbr/\u003eNow it is literally starting to fall apart.\u003cbr/\u003eScaffolding has been erected to enable craftsmen to begin preservation and restoration work.\u003cbr/\u003eArchitect, John Burton says frost has opened up stone joints at the top of the east end of the building which could fall. \u003cbr/\u003eThe poor condition of much of the building  can be seen in the upper reaches which are most exposed to the elements.\u003cbr/\u003eBurton says any further delay in restoration work could have disastrous consequences.\u003cbr/\u003eThe estimated cost of saving the cathedral is around 30 million pounds sterling ($ 58 million US Dollars). \u003cbr/\u003eA world wide fund raising campaign has been set up, headed by ex-army Brigadier David Innes (Chief Executive of Canterbury Cathedral Development Limited).\u003cbr/\u003eInnes says the present generation has a duty to preserve the building for past and future generations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cathedral is one of the top tourist attractions in England and welcomes around a million visitors each year. \u003cbr/\u003eCanterbury's place in the Christian Church has strong roots dating back to the year 597AD when a missionary called Augustine was sent here from Rome by the Pope. \u003cbr/\u003eRobert Willis, Dean of Canterbury Cathedral says that Canterbury Cathedral is thought by many to be the centre of English Christendom. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, who is the most senior clergyman in the Anglican church. \u003cbr/\u003eThe money raised from the campaign will be put towards interior repairs, re-leading the roof and the  restoration of stained glass windows, many of which date back to the 12th and early 13th centuries. \u003cbr/\u003eArchitect, John Burton says the building needs to be preserved for historical as well as religious reasons.  \u003cbr/\u003eFundraisers also hope to raise a further six million pounds sterling  ($ 11.7 million US Dollars) to renovate the choir house, where the thirty boys who attend the choir school stay.
