We are here because we are their voices. They are dying, they want freedom, they want democracy. Dan Rather should interview them too and let them say what's on their minds. He's an assassin and that's what we were yelling: 'Asesino' (assassin). He's an assassin. People'd rather die and try to make it to Miami than staying in Cuba. They take their chances and some of them do die. And we're here because we're not going to forget them. I have never been to Cuba, my parents are Cuban.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Brandy Carlo, Protester\u003cbr/\u003eSnubbed by the mayor and the president during the celebration of the United Nation's 50th anniversary, Castro received a rapturous welcome from the people of Harlem- a predominantly black neighbourhood in New York City.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the second time they have embraced him as one of their own- he first stayed in Harlem in 1960.\u003cbr/\u003eHe explained why he had donned his familiar army uniform after days of wearing his suit to other U-N functions.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You know I did not study the career of looking like a gentleman in a business suit. I only had to do it, and I did not study to be a politician, I had to learn the trade along the way. And the interesting thing is that we waged a battle and we won.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Fidel Castro, Cuban President\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1960, Castro had only been in power for a year, and came to stay in Harlem after he and his entourage were forced to leave their Manhattan hotel because of complaints about their behaviour.\u003cbr/\u003eThen as now, Harlem gave him a warm welcome which was in sharp contrast to anti-Communist sentiments he encountered during parts of his visit.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I mean those were unforgettable days for me, the days when I came to the Theresa hotel many years ago. There was such hostility, there was such a campaign against our country. I went past one area and they did like this (gestures 'thumbs down' sign). I didn't know what they meant by that. But I could imagine that something was wrong. But everything changed when I came to Harlem.
