Mid of the same\u003cbr/\u003eHungary has around 10,000 postmen to deliver the mail, but only one of them still uses a horse and cart on his daily round.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the remote rural communities of the Great Hungarian Plain the horse is still the best way to get around.\u003cbr/\u003eFor postman Istvan Kulik the working day starts in the stables.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has to harness his trusty mare Kati to get ready for the daily round of deliveries around the small Hungarian town of Gater.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the Hungarian postal service has around 10,000 delivery workers, Istvan is the last postman still using a horse.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rural communities around the town depend on Istvan and Kati for their contact with the outside world.\u003cbr/\u003eGater is 130 kilometres (80 miles) southeast of the capital Budapest, in an area of grasslands known as the Puszta.\u003cbr/\u003eThe roads in this part of the Great Hungarian Plain are often no more than muddy tracks. Getting around by horse is still the most reliable means of transport.\u003cbr/\u003eKulik, 53 years old, has been a postman for 24 years. Before that he was a shepherd at a farming collective and he and his wife, Erzsike, still raise some cows, sheep, chicken and pigs around their house.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt first Kulik had to supply his own buggy, but the one in he uses now belongs to the Magyar Posta, Hungary's national mail service.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I began working as a mail carrier on horseback for the Hungarian Post Office on May 16, 1987, but back then I used my own equipment.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe horse drawing the postal buggy is a 10-year old Nonius, a local breed once favoured by the Hungarian cavalry. The mare inherited the job from her grandmother and now her own daughter is being trained to take her place.\u003cbr/\u003eKulik distributes letters, packages, magazines and newspapers, while also carrying out another crucial task of Hungarian letter carriers: handing out pension and welfare payments.  \u003cbr/\u003eHis work also gives him the chance to put into practice skills in which he doesn't have a formal education, including family counsellor, veterinarian, agricultural adviser and agony uncle. \u003cbr/\u003eFor many of the 60-odd families on his mail route, living in relative isolation, Kulik is sometimes the only outsider the farmers see for months - a vital link to the rest of the world. Thanks to his discretion, Kulik's stops are also a bit like a confessional for them.   \u003cbr/\u003e\"The people are very keen for the postman to arrive. I tell them some news and I am the one they can talk to and if there's a problem, they can tell me about it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike many urban mail carriers, Kulik's livelihood has not been threatened by E-mail and other modern communications methods.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe farmers on his route rarely have computers or Internet access, and they rely on Kulik for deliveries of everything from bread to gas cylinders.\u003cbr/\u003eIt may seem like a time warp but modern lifestyles have taken their toll on the farms and farmers around Gater. \u003cbr/\u003eYoung people rarely stick around to carry on with the arduous work of farming that their families have been practicing, sometimes for centuries, moving instead to the cities and the comforts of urban living.\u003cbr/\u003eKulik has witnessed the changes first hand.\u003cbr/\u003e\"During these past 24 years, I can say in all honesty I've seen the dereliction of these farms. There are young people on the farms near the city, but in the more distant farms it's no longer like it used to be, when the family died out and the son carried on. Here the young people go to the cities, to the factories. They've learned a trade, not this agricultural work where there is no Christmas, no Easter, there are no holidays and work has to be done every day. Unfortunately the farming world is shrinking, the old folks are dying and there are fewer and fewer people to replace them.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe migration of young people away from the farms leaves many farmers isolated.\u003cbr/\u003eOn several occasions over the years, Kulik been the one the first one to discover the dead bodies of people on his route who have died alone.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Kulik as also been called upon to act as midwife.\u003cbr/\u003eFor farmer Jozsef Kiss Kulik's arrival one day came could not have been timed better. One of his cows was giving birth, but the calf's leg was stuck and Kiss needed extra help to pull it out. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The leg of the calf was already out and I was alone. That's how it turned out. If he didn't arriving there at the same time, it would not have turned out like it did. The calf would still be inside. That's exactly the same cow, later I sold him. Sometimes, there's some extraordinary work for him. He castrates the pigs at my place, castrates the ram. He's also the veterinarian.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSometimes the harsh weather of the Hungarian Puszta, especially the thick mud or the deep snow, forces Kulik to leave the buggy behind and take to the rounds mounted on Kati, for whose feeding he is given a special stipend by the postal service.  \u003cbr/\u003eKulik admits that some days it would be easier if he had a van to deliver the mail.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, despite the discomforts, this is a life he wouldn't trade:\u003cbr/\u003e\"I love life in the open and nature and the other factor is that I enjoy talking to people, meeting them. I've been asked about the difference between a flock of sheep and people, which did I like working with more.
