Cholas showing off their costumes \u003cbr/\u003eBolivian women who wear traditional clothing are known as 'cholas'.  \u003cbr/\u003eThey have long been subject to discrimination and even prejudice.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now thanks to a cultural resurgence they are taking pride in their history and culture - and especially their clothes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe women staffing these market stalls in the bolivian capital La Paz are locally known as cholas.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Chola\" is the term applied to indigenous women from across this South American country and their style of dress is unique.\u003cbr/\u003eThey wear full skirts known as polleras, decorative shawls and unmistakable bowler hats.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the chola dress combination favoured by Aymara Indian women in Bolivia.  \u003cbr/\u003eOnce dismissed as clothes for poor Indians, some say a new pride is emerging amongst the cholas and they are taking their fashions to the world.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn La Paz they are competing to see who is chola queen.\u003cbr/\u003eNot a ball gown or a bikini in sight but instead the shawls, the layered skirts and the hats. \u003cbr/\u003eNo matter how cold the Andean winter get these ladies always wear Spanish bullfighter's flats (sandals) made from clear plastic.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe competition hopes to instil pride in indigenous women, as Georgina Limache one of the contestants says. \u003cbr/\u003eSuch empowerment mirrors the grass-roots political rise of Bolivia's indigenous majority. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a country where some 70 percent of its nine million people are of Indian descent, the rise of President Evo Morales, Bolivia's first indigenous president, has no doubt given chola fashion a new cachet.  \u003cbr/\u003eAfter centuries of discrimination and stigma there are now chola Congresswomen.  \u003cbr/\u003eOne sits on Morales' cabinet, while another presides over the assembly rewriting Bolivia's constitution. \u003cbr/\u003eBeatriz Canedo Patino is one of Bolivia's most famous fashion designers.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says cholas are more fashion conscious than anyone. Despite having lived for most of her professional career in Paris and New York, Beatriz Canedo Patino became interested in the history of chola dress.  \u003cbr/\u003eAs she explains, the style was taken from La Paz's Spanish colonisers and mixed in with resonances from the Inca empire. \u003cbr/\u003eHer own designs have unmistakeable references to chola chic.  \u003cbr/\u003eSo much so that the President Evo Morales commissioned her to design his outfit for his official inauguration.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe chola style tends to be the daily dress of many of the city's older women. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd most women in La Paz, like in major cities around the world, are more comfortable in jeans.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut a growing number of daughters and granddaughters are celebrating an urban update of the outfit. \u003cbr/\u003eMaira Natividad, the Beauty Queen Miss Chola El Alto 2008 says wearing the pollera is very important for her.\u003cbr/\u003eThe demand for the chola outfits has risen and beauty pageants like these have also emerged.  \u003cbr/\u003eWomen are now buying polleras (the traditional skirt) to wear for special occasions. \u003cbr/\u003eBolivian Chola TV presenter Ana Tapia says chola women are becoming increasingly visible in Bolivian society.\u003cbr/\u003eSo even as these women strive to break La Paz's old castes of race and class they resist
