from as far as Brazil, Mexico and Japan - are all vying against each other for coveted robo-titles.\u003cbr/\u003eHere, German students from the University of Friedrich-Alexander Erlangen-Nuremberg are competing against Iran's MRL-SPL (Mechatronics Research Laboratory - Standard Platform League) on the pitch.\u003cbr/\u003eGerman student, Frauke Faure, is from the University of Friedrich-Alexander Erlangen-Nuremberg.\u003cbr/\u003eShe sees similarities between the IranOpen and other robotic events in Europe and says it certainly lives up to world-class standards.\u003cbr/\u003e\"MRL-S is a very, very good team and the other Iran teams are also good and the atmosphere is very beautiful and big yes, it's a big, big competition,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eIran is the only Middle East country to have hosted RoboCup events in the region for nine consecutive years.\u003cbr/\u003eThey've been running since 2006 under the title of \"IranOpen\".\u003cbr/\u003eIranian teams have increasingly been active participants in world robotic contests since 1998.\u003cbr/\u003eEsfandiar Bamdad, is the Managing Director of Baset Pazhuh Tehran company, their scientists and technicians have designed and manufactured middle-sized humanoid robots programmed to play soccer.\u003cbr/\u003eBamdad has spent many years working and researching in the field of robotics.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says academic knowledge of robotics in Iran is advanced, but argues that when it comes to country's industrial and technical capabilities at building robots, there's still room for improvement.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Science of robotics has an industrial and an academic aspect,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The fact is that we (Iran) are backward from the industrial point of view. Nonetheless, we are quite advanced academically; we have captured first and second places in the world. We have turned out perfectly in competitions.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe term \"RoboCup\" refers to an international robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) competitive event held annually at different countries around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the International RoboCup Federation, it was first staged in Osaka, Japan in 1996.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers hope the events will promote research in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile at first, soccer matches were the predominant event, now there's other fields including RoboCupRescue, RoboCup@Home and RoboCupJunior.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Robocup@Home, participants craft and utilise robots for domestic purposes, while RoboCup Junior is an educational initiative designed to introduce the event to school children.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to the annual competitions, local events such as the IranOpen are organised to give novices and young robotic scientists the opportunity to compete at world-class standards and prepare for international events.\u003cbr/\u003eThese robots are completely autonomous, meaning they're not controlled remotely or by their human designers.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are around 2,230 participants competing at the event.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're from 340 Iranian teams and 48 foreign teams.\u003cbr/\u003eOne team from Britain are drawing at lot of attention with their soccer-playing humanoid robots.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir robotics team is called \"Bold Hearts\" and they're from the University of Hertfordshire.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The students here are really enthusiastic,\" says Sander Van Dijk, from \"Bold Hearts\".\u003cbr/\u003e\"There's also, always, a lot of them. The teams are really big and also with a big spread in age and in gender as well. And it is always really good to see. And it seems that technology is really highly promoted here and that's really, really great to see.\"\u003cbr/\u003eStudents from Qazvin Islamic Azad University (QIAU), located around 93 miles northwest of Tehran, play a pioneering role in the country's robotics industry.\u003cbr/\u003eThey've also been one of the key organisers of this event for the past nine years.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Dr. Morteza Mousakhani, President of Qazvin Islamic Azad University, this year the number of foreign teams attending the event has doubled.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This year, the event has received a rare welcome from foreign players compared to the previous year that shows an almost duplicated growth,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The participating teams have also improved and have great teams this year. We have strong teams from different countries of the world.\"\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Luis Almeida, a Trustee of the International RoboCup Federation and President of the Portuguese RoboCup National Committee, is a special guest at the event and has travelled to Iran for the first time.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's always good if the politicians, you know, find a way to open doors,\" says Almeida.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Then we can take advantage and actually mix together and exchange ideas and contribute to the improvement of science.
